TV Sally Struthers Wants No Part of an "All in the Family" Reunion

Observer: Do you still get recognized as Gloria from "All in the Family"?

Struthers: I get recognized as everything. I swear, I've got people who know my name as Sally or they know me as Gloria. Or I get teenagers who think I'm Babette from my seven years on "Gilmore Girls," or I get people who know me but they don't know who I am.

Observer: "All in the Family" is such a part of TV history. What's it like to be a part of that?

Struthers: You know, being a part of "All in the Family" just keeps getting better. It's the gift that keeps on giving. It sells tickets at the theater. That's wonderful, but for me personally, I'm always approached by people who have a story for me about what it meant for them them to watch that show, who they watched it with, people who aren't here anymore. ... People tell me that even if they had issues the rest of the week, they came together to watch that show.

Observer: Do you still keep in touch with ("All in the Family" stars) Jean Stapleton and Rob Reiner?

Struthers: I do. I keep in touch with Jean probably the most. And Rob Reiner, I hardly ever run into him. He's too busy making motion pictures. The one I miss terribly is Carroll O'Connor. (Series star O'Connor died in 2001). He was a very interesting, bright, funny man. My father died two years before "All in the Family" came on, and Carroll O'Connor became my father off-screen, as well as on.

Observer: Could you see a TV reunion with Stapleton and Reiner?

Struthers: I don't think a TV reunion would be good, when people can't even remember that it was called "All in the Family." They say, I loved you in "All in My Family," I loved you in "All my Children."

And I don't think it would work without Carroll O'Connor. He was the pivot, he was the reason the show worked. It would just be kind of sad. It would be be hard to be hilarious without him around.

Yeah, I can see where she's coming from.

Cool

Sally is right. You couldn't do an All In The Family reunion without Archie!

I agree it would be insane (and disrespectful) to do a reunion without Carroll. At least one with everyone in character.

Maybe they could do a retrospective, the way MASH did a few years ago with all the surviving members chatting about the show and it's impact. Sally, Rob, Jean, Danielle, maybe Sherman Helmsley and Isabel Sanford and Mike Evans could all show up; I'm sure everyone would love to see them all again.

I'm sure it's an innocent mistake but Isabel Sanford died in 2004. Mike Evans also died too a few years ago.

They could also include Betty Garrett. (Irene Lorenzo)

Yep, I mentioned her. (Don't worry; you're still about a hundred "space outs" behind me.)

Carroll O'Connor was AITF. There can be no reunion without him. Plus they killed Edith off so Jean couldn't be in one either. What are they going to do...have one with Mike, Gloria and Joey?

She and Rob were together a few years ago on the TVLand Awards and were hilarious.

I agree a reunion show would never work. When I first read the title to this post I was ready to think Sally was one of those ungrateful stars who thought the show was too good for her and she was too good for all the other cast members. I'm glad it didn't turn out to be the case.
