TV ABC 'Forgets' "The Forgotten"

ABC Forgets The Forgotten
March 3, 2010 | By: Laura Prudom

For those of you finding ABC's freshman drama The Forgotten less than memorable, ABC seems to share your opinion.

Rather than letting Christian Slater's new crime procedural run its course, the network plans to pull the March 23 episode, originally designated as the show's first season finale, and has dubbed next week's episode the season (and probably series) ender instead, the Live Feed reports.

This follows the Alphabet's earlier decision to replace the March 16 ep with a FlashForward clip show (ouch).

The Forgotten has had a hard time finding a foothold in the ratings since its Sept. 2009 debut, which begs the question of why ABC opted to renew the drama for an additional five episodes after canning the more compelling Eastwick midseason, just when the dramedy was starting to build momentum.

At this point, Christian Slater probably thinks it's something personal -- this looks to be the second primetime drama in as many years to get the chop with him headlining, following the cancellation of My Own Worst Enemy on NBC two years ago.

Default I suspected something was up....

...when ABC "suddenly" threw on a "special edition" of "20/20" ["Before They Were Stars"] after "LOST" last night (what's the difference between ABC News and a "reality show" production company these days? VIRTUALLY NOTHING!).

That'll teach the network not to trust Jerry Bruckheimer to create a "flash hit" series for them [didn't they learn their lesson with Aaron Spelling 25 years ago]? "Formula" TV can only go so far- so what if Bruckheimer produces about a hundred series- almost all of them "guaranteed hits"- for CBS? Couldn't we get in on some of that ratings gravy?, ABC executives wondered. "THE FORGOTTEN" might have lasted a bit longer, had ABC co-owned the series with Bruckheimer. But they didn't- and rule of thumb these days is, that if a network has no direct interest or ownership of a series that's doing a mediocre job attracting viewers and advertisers, that's the first one they'll cancel.

Personally, I thought Christian Slater did a better job on "THE FORGOTTEN" than "MY OWN WORST ENEMY" for NBC last year {"Yeah, we might have shown an episode to the whales at Sea World- so what? I never tried to bite anyone after I watched it...punched them out, yes, but biting, never!"}.
