The suit famed killer OJ Simpson wore when he was acquitted of murder may be going to the Smithsonian Institution.
After a court hearing today, and after years of squabbling, lawyers for Simpson and Fred Goldman agreed to donate the "acquittal suit." The judge called Simpson from prison, where he's serving time for armed robbery and kidnapping, to get his approval. Simpson's lawyer said his client agreed, provided that no one make money off the threads. David Cook, attorney for Goldman, says, "The donation to the Smithsonian of the acquittal suit puts front and center the shock to America when justice escaped the Los Angeles courthouse. The memory of Ron Goldman shall be on permanent display." Cook added, "If the suit is the emblematic of justice gone berserk, justice is served." No word if the Smithsonian will accept the suit. I hope the Smithsonian has a giant warehouse like in Raiders Of The Lost Ark, so they can take OJ's suit and put it in a crate where it will be forgotten about for the rest of eternity.

I wouldn't have any interest in seeing that suit; although I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of him in his orange jumpsuit now.

Please don't tell me the suit will be on display with a plaque next to it saying, "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit."

It's a museum, and the OJ trial is a major part of the 1990s in American history. I think it makes perfect sense.

O.J. goes Smithsonian? Really?
Is this what Solomon would have decided? For a baker's dozen of years, ex-sports star O.J. Simpson's former sports agent and Fred Goldman, who won a civil judgment against Simpson in the murders of Goldman's son, Ron, and Simpson's ex-wife, Nicole Brown, have gone round and round in court over ... a suit. Not a lawsuit. An actual suit. The tannish-looking one Simpson wore the day in 1995 that he was acquitted of the double murders. The reason that ownership of said garment was a matter of legal dispute is that it could, some say, be worth thousands -- and Simpson still owes Goldman about $33 million and change in the civil suit. But Simpson didn't have possession of the suit [shirt and necktie included] all these years, His ex-agent, Mike Gilbert, did. Today's Solomonic settlement donates the dispute suit to ... the Smithsonian, the nation's attic, repository of all things whimsical and historical, from Archie Bunker's easy chair to the top hat Lincoln was wearing the night he was assassinated. But as the Associated Press reports, nobody's evidently yet checked to see whether the Smithsonian wants it. Gilbert said outside the courtroom, ``It's part of American history. People should be able to see it and reflect on what went so wrong for someone who had everything." The man for whom things ''went so wrong'' won't be needing a suit for nine to 33 years, seeing as how he's serving time in a Nevada prison for kidnap and robbery convictions. But I can't imagine he isn't relishing the idea of his ''told you so'' suit on display at one of the most famous museums in the world. If the muckety-mucks at the Smithsonian are wondering whether they should accept such an exhibition, whether anyone would even care to see such a thing, I'll donate my vox pop right now: Rather than waste a minute gazing upon the Simpson suit, I'd sooner spend all day visiting an exhibit on the history of the ZIP Code. Even if it didn't have a gift shop. |

O.J. Simpson's Suit Not a Fit for Smithsonian
(March 2) -- Abraham Lincoln's top hat, Muhammad Ali's boxing gloves, Dorothy's ruby red slippers ... and O.J. Simpson's acquittal suit? Not so fast, says The Smithsonian Institution. The Smithsonian said today it will not welcome the beige suit worn by Simpson on the day in 1995 when he was acquitted in the double murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend, Ron Goldman. O.J. Simpson reacts as he's found not guilty in October 1995. The Smithsonian said it would not collect the suit he wore that day. "The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History will not be collecting O.J. Simpson's suit," the museum said in a statement. "The decision was made by the museum's curators together with the director." The Smithsonian's decision comes a day after California Superior Court Judge Joseph Biderman approved the plan to send Simpson's suit to the Smithsonian, ending a 13-year legal dispute between Goldman's father, Fred, and Simpson's former sports agent, Mike Gilbert, both of whom laid claim to Simpson's duds. Goldman had already won another expensive suit -- a $33.5-million civil judgment against Simpson in 1997. But saying he hasn't collected a penny of it, Goldman set out to seize Simpson's now-anemic assets, including the potentially pricey beige suit. Unfortunately for Goldman, Gilbert had the suit, not to mention the shirt and tie that completed Simpson's ensemble. The drawn-out battle ended Monday with both Goldman and Gilbert agreeing to the donation. Simpson even called the judge from prison in Nevada, where he's serving nine to 33 years for armed robbery and kidnapping, to say he approved the donation provided no party made a profit from it. "The donation to the Smithsonian of the acquittal suit puts front and center the shock to America when justice escaped the Los Angeles courthouse," Goldman said through his attorney, David Cook. "If the suit is emblematic of justice gone berserk, justice is served." "It's part of American history," Gilbert said outside the courtroom. "People should be able to see it and reflect on what went so wrong for someone who had everything." The only problem? No one asked the Smithsonian if it wanted the suit. According to Monday's legal agreement, if Simpson's suit was rejected by the Smithsonian, it would be offered "to another museum or institution of higher learning." It's not the first time the Smithsonian has rejected an American artifact with questionable value. It also passed on Monica Lewinsky's infamous blue dress. In an opinion article in at the Los Angeles Times Web site, Patt Morrison suggests Simpson's suit and Lewinsky's dress go to a future Hall of Shame -- or simply remain in the closet. "Rather than waste a minute gazing upon the Simpson suit, I'd sooner spend all day visiting an exhibit on the history of the ZIP Code," Morrison wrote. "Even if it didn't have a gift shop." |
