Thumbs down Movie Reviews: "Cop Out"

Movie Reviews: Cop Out

Critics, who often seem to be on a best-friend basis with writer-director Kevin Smith, have turned on him. There's hardly a decent review of Cop Out among all of them appearing today.

And some of them are excoriating.

Take Peter Howell's in the Toronto Star, for example: "This pitiful excuse for entertainment is utterly bereft of wit, intelligence or craft on any level. The only thing left to screw up would have been to leave the lens cap on the camera. Wait, that would have been an improvement."

Mick Lasalle in the San Francisco Chronicle says that Smith "has given us 110 worthless minutes."

Wesley Morris in the Boston Globe calls it "a spit wad of potty jokes and F-grade storytelling."

Other reviews are less scathing but mostly critical nonetheless.

"A lot of the dialogue is intended as funny, but man, is it lame," writes Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times. "Many of the gags possibly looked good on paper, but watching Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan struggle with them is like watching third graders do Noel Coward, if Noel Coward had been rewritten by Kevin Smith."

In USA Today, Claudia Puig comments: "Cop Out is foul-mouthed but not funny, bullet-riddled but not exciting, crammed with contrivances that go nowhere. And, perhaps worst of all, it musters up no chemistry between its buddy-cop leads."

Chris Vognar in the Dallas Morning News comments: "Cop Out is like a parody of a parody of a parody, so derivative and desperate in its pleas for laughter that it's hard to tell when it's making fun of itself and when it has simply run out of ideas."

I just saw this and it's a "no thanks" from me.

It wasn't funny at all, maybe a few laughs but this one just stunk. I expected a lot better from Kevin Smith.
