Music Carly Simon Reveals the Inspiration for the Song "You're So Vain"

According to an interpretation of a clip of a remastered version of "You're So Vain," Carly Simon named David Geffen as the target of the song.

When the song is played backwards, at least as heard in the clip, a voice whispers "David."

Geffen was the head of Simon's record label at the time, and was supposedly paying more attention to Joni Mitchell.

That would mean it is not about exes Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger or Kris Kristofferson.

Cool

I'm so vain that I thought the song was about me! Seriously I would of never guessed it was about David Geffen.

Or maybe it's a false answer! Carly has hedged on the identity of this mystery cad for almost 40 years now, so I wouldn't put it past her.

I think Ruth Gordon must have had higher standards than that!! This reminds me of a conversation I once had years ago with a former co-worker. It was a slow day and Mick Jagger's name somehow came into the conversation. I said "who HASN'T Mick Jagger slept with?" He raised his hand, then I raised mine.

Yes. It was a 2003 auction to benefit Martha's Vineyard Community Services. The winning bidder was Dick Ebersol of NBC Sports. He went o Carly's house and she sang the song to him and then whispered in his ear the name of the person the song was about. The lone caveat was that he was not allowed to tell any body the name.

I remember that. He's the husband of Susan Saint James, if I'm not mistaken.
