"Disappointed" and "disgraceful" were perhaps some of the gentler terms used by concert-goers in Brisbane to describe a recent show by the legendary and often highly-acclaimed singer, Whitney Houston.
"It's the worst concert I've ever been to in my life," said one audience member while standing in the parking lot of the Australian arena during Houston's set. In fact, some viewers were so displeased by what they saw and did not even stay for the entire show. Many left midway through the concert and expressed their severe dissatisfaction with the pop diva, who regardless still stands as one of the highest-selling recording artists of all time. "Definitely not worth the $165 [for a ticket]," one fan lamented. Another fan in the arena parking lot was even harsher towards Houston's singing skills and overall ability to keep the audience engaged, flatly stating, "[Houston] couldn't entertain a dead rat...to be honest." While her singing may come into question by fans Down Under, perhaps the most amount of surprise surrounds the harsh reaction of this concert in contrast with the prior amount of accolades Houston has received throughout her long-spanning career. Publications such as Rolling Stone and The New York Times have often ranked her as one of the greatest singers in pop-music history. And many current popular recording artists of today, including Jennifer Hudson and Mariah Carey, have frequently cited their intense appreciation for Houston's talent and profound influence on their own bodies of work. Prior chart-topping, world renowned hits from the 80s and early '90s such as "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" or "I Will Always Love You" have been severely overshadowed by highly-publicized substance abuse setbacks, and a volatile marriage and subsequent divorce from troubled R&B singer, Bobby Brown. Emerging in the mid-1980s, Houston (the cousin of popular 60s and 70s soul-singer Dionne Warwick) rose to prominence almost immediately following the release of her debut album, "Whitney." Houston also broke racial barriers as one of the first African-American singers to have music videos featured on MTV (remember when the music channel actually played music videos?) at a period when white artists were almost exclusively featured on the then-fledgling cable network. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/...n6236489.shtml |

I think I'd pay to see her, but as a comedy show. Watching her attempt to sing those songs with her non-existant voice would be hilarious! It's a shame, though. She used to be amazing, one of the best. Hopefully with the help of a vocal coach, she can gain back some of her lost ability.

I saw clips from the disastrous concert on one of those tabloid-type entertainment shows. It was quite embarrassing. I'm not sure if Whitney can ever recapture her career after so many years of drug abuse and living with the destructive Bobby Brown...

I Will Always Love You - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgKgsvpavAQ
Warning: It's quite painful! The song is barely recognizable. |

It's funny that some people are defending her saying, "no one expects her to sing like she did in the 80's and 90's." Well, no, maybe not to a tee, but we wouldn't have expected her to lose every bit of her singing ability! It's sad that not being able to put down the crack pipe has completely ruined her voice.

Maybe if they paid ME $5 Id go, but I'd want to bring my IPod with me, so I could listen to some GOOD music! Now for $165, I'd actually listen to her!I braved it and listened to about 15 seconds. Not as painful as I had feared, but I hate that song anyway, so even in her "normal" voice it's hard to listen to it! Kind of sad because when I was a senior in high school our class song at church for our youth group was "The Greatest Love of All". We used that song during our senior worship service and they played it as background to a video of our class memories. Honestly, it was never a favorite song of mine, but it was special in that respect. The one song of hers I did love was "How Will I know?". She should have quit while she was ahead because it all went downhill from there! |

She turned into a trainwreck over the past decade or so. I can't think of any other female celebrity who went from an immensely talented and pretty singer to a complete laughingstock. Very sad. She's the perfect example of why you should say no to drugs.
