Snow Falls Again In Southeast TexasWinter Weather Warning Issued For Northern Counties

Posted: Tuesday, February 23, 2010
Updated: 6:43 pm CST February 23, 2010

Houston -- Snow fell in southeast Texas Tuesday for the third time this season, KPRC Local 2 reported.A winter storm warning was issued for counties north of Houston from 8 a.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday. By Tuesday afternoon, Huntsville, Magnolia, Lake Conroe and surrounding areas started seeing the white flakes.

"This will be the third time it's snowed in southeast Texas this season," KPRC Local 2 meteorologist Anthony Yanez said. "For us, an inch-and-a-half (of snow) in College Station has been reported (at 4 p.m.), an inch up toward Madisonville," KPRC Local 2 chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley said. "To the south, it's generally just a cold rain."

Three to 5 inches of snow is possible from Madisonville to Crockett and 2 to 4 inches is predicted for Huntsville, Billingsley said."One to 2 inches of snow is expected around the Conroe area," he said. "We'll have icy roads until 10 o'clock Wednesday morning to the north."The Houston Independent School District canceled all outdoor athletic events for Tuesday.

"The half-inch to an inch of a slushy snow-mix is still a possibility for Houston as we go into Tuesday evening. It just hasn't cooled down enough at 4 p.m. The temperature is still 42," Billingsley said. A winter weather advisory was issued for Houston and surrounding counties from 2 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Some Huntsville residents were delighted to see snow falling again. "I love it. I love it. I love it. I'm catching a few snowflakes, but more (there's) more sleet than snow," Jodie Walls said."Let it come. It'd be fun," Noah Speere said.
Others were not so thrilled.

"It's horrible. I live in Texas for a reason -- sunshine, warm weather. I haven't gotten any of that in a while," Kelly Johnson said. Huntsville city officials said they are prepared for several inches of snow. "We have to make sure we're able to provide essential services -- as far as with fire, police, water services. These are very crucial to the people feeling safe," Huntsville Mayor J. Turner said.

Crews sprayed roads with magnesium chloride to make sure ice doesn't form.Highway officials urged drivers to take precautions because ice is not easy to see. "It's a condition that's frequently referred to as black ice, where you may hit a patch that may be more slippery, so you want to drive slower," Texas Department of Transportation spokeswoman Raquell Lewis said.

Cliff Spahr is a commercial truck driver. He's worried about how drivers will react if there's ice on the roads. "I'm from up north. I can drive in it," Spahr said. "But down here, you all are shaky on it."Harris County Toll Road Authority crews were out late Monday and early Tuesday to make sure all of the tollways would be safe."The safety of our patrons who drive this toll road, the citizens of Harris County, is the No. 1 priority," Sgt. Ray Neal said.

Thousands of gallons of magnesium chloride were sprayed on the roads. It prevents accumulation of ice on the roads and it is safe for the environment and vehicles."Unlike sodium and calcium chloride, this stuff is anti-corrosive, will not harm pets, will not harm humans or vegetation," Neal said.Drivers should remember to always be cautious and know their limits.

"Leave early and drive real slow," driver Shay Anderson said. "It might not be you," driver Dean Nava said. "It might be someone skidding into you."
