Thumbs up Betty White Close to Hosting SNL along with Molly Shannon, Tina Fey & Amy Poehler

When a grassroots campaign involves both Facebook and a beloved Golden Girl, the scope of its influence cannot be underestimated. To wit: Sources confirm to me exclusively that Saturday Night Live is thisclose to signing TV legend Betty White to host the show for the very first time.

But there’s a catch — and a pretty cool one at that.

White would not be hosting alone. Rather, I hear SNL is putting together a “Women of Comedy” episode that would team the former Rose Nylund with several of her younger contemporaries. Ex-SNL MVP Molly Shannon is on board, I hear, and feelers have also been put out to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. (An NBC spokesperson insists no one has been confirmed at this time.)

This tag-team approach will allow Lorne Michaels to appease White-on-SNL zealots (half a million and counting!) without making the 88-year-old shoulder the burden of all 90 minutes on her own. And hey, anything that gives Fey an opportunity to dust off her Sarah Palin impersonation — as she’s rumored to be considering — is okay with me.

Question

I think it's great that Betty may host SNL but why the extra baggage? I wouldn't mind a women of comedy theme if the other 3 weren't SNL Alumni.
Betty should host the show solo and other than Miskel Spillman I don't recall a host being even close to Betty's age so if Miskel can host it by herself then why not Betty? That Ausiello clown may think it's a cool catch but I think it's a disgrace.

I'm glad to hear they are considering having Betty host the show. God knows it needs something to attract people over the age of, well, 18.

But Fey and Poehler, though obviously talented, need to stay away for a while longer. They've both been gone, what, two weeks or something and yet every other week they're popping up in some skit or on the news. It's like the kid who finally moves away from home and then comes home every night to eat supper or do his laundry.

so does this mean that the next time say Megan Fox hosts, they are going to bring in 8 extra co-hosts to "support" her?

Post Betty White, Mary Tyler Moore

According to this Mary Tyler Moore and other co-stars from TMTMS would host SNL along with Betty White.

For ‘SNL’ … Betty White + MTM?
Posted February 23rd, 2010 by Kim

EW.com reports that the fan campaign to get Saturday Night Live’s Lorne Michaels to extend an invitation to the legend – no, the national treasure – that is Betty White, to host SNL, is close to becoming a success.

The catch? White wouldn’t host an episode an alone, because of concern that the 88-year-old Emmy winner shouldn’t have to “shoulder the burden” of hosting a whole 90-minute show by herself.

Fair enough, though, instead of bringing back a slew of former SNL-ers to co-star with White in a “Women of Comedy” episode, as EW.com reports is likely to happen, why not take the opportunity to make something truly awesome happen and reunite Betty White with fellow Golden Girls star Rue McClanahan (who turned 75 earlier this week) and Mary Tyler Moore Show cohorts Mary Tyler Moore, Cloris Leachman, Valerie Harper and Georgia Engel to host SNL?

That's a Women of Comedy line-up! Among them, Engel is the only one who hasn’t won an Emmy (though she’s been nominated five times, most recently for her stint as Robert’s mother-in-law on Everybody Loves Raymond).

And lest anyone complain that the Emmy-winning sitcom legends might not draw an audience to the show – a ridiculous statement, obviously, when nearly half a million people have signed on to the Betty-for-SNL Facebook campaign – consider that both White and Leachman are still active in primetime. White will star in TV Land’s fall sitcom Hot in Cleveland (with Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick), while Leachman is attached to the sitcom pilot Keep Hope Alive, My Name Is Earl creator Greg Garcia’s quirky comedy about a twentysomething guy who becomes a single dad when his one-night-stand babymama ends up on death row.

I think they were just suggesting that other MTM co-stars would be a better idea (which it would be).

That would be a great idea. So would Rue, but as she is recovering from a stroke she might not be up for it at this point.

Ruth Gordon hosted SNL once, in the early years.

I honestly don't want this to happen. I would prefer Betty to host alone but I don't know if the things that have been said is true but Lorne Michaels said that it might be a bit too much for Betty to host alone at her age. But I think she could do it alone cause she can accually get people to watch her she's that HILarious when she wants to be. And I know there are tones of skits she could do on that show as host.

But, at least Lorne Michaels knows about this campaign and will get her on the show. I want to see her host but alone and not with the other 3 women.
