Default Brace Yourself - 02/13/70

http://www.youtube.com/user/Retrotee...57/mGV9QDcPzxY

Most Brady fans know that one of the boys (Barry Williams?) teased Maureen McCormick by saying she would end up keeping the braces (or needing them) and that the tears Marcia cried were the real tears that Maureen cried at the thought of being ill like her mother .

Watch Florences eyes as the camera pulls back during the scene with Marcia eating; she can be seen looking off camera waiting for the cue to deliver her line. Her face changes from serious to jokey within a second .

Peter has his lunch put in a plastic lunch box. I am sure the Brady kids normally got a lunch in a paper bag.

Michael Brady seems to be channelling Michael Jackson. Throughout the episode he seems to be wearing dark shoes with white socks (Hee-he!).

Watch the scene in the clothes shop very carefully and pay attention to the walls. Seem familiar? It is actually the bedroom set for Mike and Carol re-dressed. Alice enters from behind where the headboard would be and Carols dressing table has a curtain in front of it suggesting a changing room.

Blooper - At the close of the episode when Marcia stands at the top of the stairs the scene cuts to a reaction shot of the family, however they are all looking at the spot where Marcia and her date will, in seconds, have a conversation rather than looking up towards the stairs.

Bachu-Good observations on Carol's cue, the master bedroom being made over as the dress shop, and the Bradys (sitting in order) not looking at Marcia descending the stairs! I never noticed those things before.

It always bothered me how they made a big deal about Marcia's braces in this episode, then she never had them again. Later, both Bobby and Cindy had braces and it was never mentioned! Check out Marcia's braces: in the scenes where she has soap on her face and when Alice is fitting her dress, the braces are smaller. More white of her front teeth is showing.

Kitchen scenes: Watch when Marcia breaks up the bread, the size changes. It's kind of like what you mentioned before about scene cuts and the levels of beverages in glasses. When Alice adds spaghetti to the pot, it should soften and disappear into the pot. It just stays there, stiff as a board! It always bothers me too when just one kid is eating, or one kid has his lunch packed, like Peter. And you're right, since when did they start using lunch boxes?

If Alice altered the dress, I doubt if she would be able to return it!

Living room scenes: The position of Carol's necklace changes between the time she sits down and when there are closeups of her talking to Mike. Nice socks, Mike! (They must have been washed in SAFE!). How come we hear Marcia's footsteps when she walks arm in arm with Alan across the carpeted living room floor!?

Perhaps something suddenly came up making him late for school . He also leaves through the utility room.

I bet when she returned it she was lucky that the shop keeper never checked it. Cheeky Alice!

It was also during the filming of that episode that Maureen learned a disturbing family secret (according to her autobiography). So those tears you see her crying in this episode are real - and no one on set knew it.

I remember hearing something about that but I don't know the details.

I think her mother had syphilis and she was convinced she would go crazy and get it as well. She talks about it a lot in her book which is a very good read.

I wonder if Maureen McCormick actually wore braces in real life, or if she just had them for this storyline, because like you said we never see Marcia with braces after that. Eve Plumb, Susan Olsen and Mike Lookinland all later actually wore braces, but it was never addressed on the show.

Also, 4 years later when Marcia had a crush on her hot-looking dentist, wouldn't you think their would have been some reference made to her formally wearing braces?

I think it was just a plot device. I think this happened when Jan got glasses though I am sure that Eve later did need them in real life so I think we may have seen her wearing them again.

Yeah, I saw Susan Olsen in a TV interview a while back and she confirmed that Eve indeed did wear glasses in real life. That's why you saw her wearing them in multiple episodes.

I even remember her glasses being mentioned in a subsequient episode. It was the one in which Alice quit her job with the Brady's, got another job and then came back. Alice and Jan had a brief interchange regarding the glasses. Does anyone else remember this?

I think that was when Alice was working at the diner. The kids went to get her to come back and Alice said something like "Jan, stop squinting. Where are your glasses?"

Another blooper in this episode,

Marcia's date for the dance is Alan Anthony but is credited as "Craig!" Where did that come from!
