First Joan Prather Now Dick Van Patten Involved in Possible Hit and Run Crash - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

January 15, 2010 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports actor Dick Van Patten was involved in a two vehicle crash.

The actor was involved in a collision in Los Angeles when he was driving his BMW in San Fernando Valley and struck the back of another vehicle.

According to authorities Van Patten looked for the other vehicle and did not see it, and left the scene of the accident without exchanging information. The woman driving the other vehicle had pulled into a gas station where she telephoned police.

It is unclear whether or not the actor abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot, or whether he drove away. But Van Patten claims he drove to the Santa Anita race track, where according to his representative, Jeff Ballard, he can be found; and the only place he runs is down the race track stretch when his horses win.

Police at the scene spoke with Van Patten’s son after they were unable to locate the actor, and were considering hit and run charges. The police at the scene did decide after speaking with the actor’s son to allow the insurance companies to handle the collision

Considering Dick Van Patten's reputation and the fact he's been one of Hollywoods good guys for years , I tend to believe him.

Unfortunately for Mr. Van Patten leaving the scene of an accident is illegal regardless of whether you looked for the other car first. And his reputation isn't going to change that. I just hope no one in the other car was hurt.

He IS over 80...maybe he shouldn't be driving anymore.

Doesn't sound very serious. And I don't understand, what fault it is of DVP if the woman drove away from the scene first. He didn't know where she went!

The woman should've immediately stopped her car instead of pulling into the gas station. I know DVP is in his 80's but how he lost sight of the car after hitting it is beyond me. I don't know about California law but in most states if you hit another car from behind you are automatically at fault. Instead of going to the race track DVP should've also called the police to report the accident.

From what I am reading, it didn't sound very serious. Still, they both should have stayed at the scene to make sure everyone was all right.

I do not think what Dick Van Patten did was as bad as what Joan Prather
did. I just hope his image in Hollywood does not suffer because of this.
