Confused NFL Network to Air Arena Football League Games

Link

In September we noted that a new indoor football league, known as Arena League 1, was preparing to begin play in 2010, combining teams from the defunct Arena Football League, the minor league called af2, and other indoor football leagues. Now Arena League 1 has a TV deal.

NFL Network will air games from Arena League 1 (which is expected to adopt the old Arena Football League name once all the deals with all the teams are in place) on Friday nights beginning in April, Sports Business Journal is reporting.

"We embrace football at all levels," said Charles Coplin, vice president of programming for the NFL. "This spring schedule gives us a weekly live game featuring some players who may eventually play in the NFL."

The new Arena League isn't going to be a ratings juggernaut for NFL Network, but it's more football on TV. No one can complain about that.

Cool

Seems like a good fit to me. Arena football gets a TV deal and NFL Network gets live programming in the NFL off season.

I see your point but I've always found Arena Football to be downright boring.

Then they need to change the title of the F*cking network then to THE FOOTBALL NETWORK since arena football has nothing to do with the NFL

Except that there may be players in Arena Football who will eventually play in the NFL. It's happened before. (i.e. Kurt Warner) So you can be sure there will be more than a few NFL scouts watching Arena Football on the NFL Network.

All they have to do is change the name of the network since they air college Football and now Arena Football.

It's called the NFL Network because it's owned by the NFL not because it only broadcasts NFL football. And as the owner of the network, the NFL can air whatever programming it wants. (including college football and arena football)

The title could be misleading to new subscribers but the same could be said of other networks too. If somebody subscribed to MTV expecting Music related programming they be in for disappointment. If someone subscribed to Turner Classic Movies expecting nothing but Tina Turner movies they find they were misguided. So many network titles are misleading until you come to understand what they really mean. When people understand that the NFL Network is so called because it is owned by the NFL they won't be surprised to finf other football related programming on that network.

So you're not a fan of The Canadian Football League Sonny? That's all right. I don't imagine you get to see much CFL football where you live. Maybe none.

I did watch a few games back in the 80's during one of the NFL strikes. I remember one of the networks did air some games. I'm not sure if any American network carries any games these days. It's a good league but the only league I really ever follow is the NFL.
