MTV redesigns logo, drops "Music Television"
Feb 8, 2010

After 29 years, MTV has redesigned its logo and finally dropped "Music Television."

Basically it looks just like the old logo, only with some cropping. The design is getting flak from bloggers, but this is long overdue.

Having "Music Television" on there was just a constant reminder that MTV was branding itself one way, programming itself another.

Works for me.

Showing music videos on a TV channel geared towards teens and 20somethings 24/7 or even 12 hours out of the day is pretty pointless.

It wasn't pointless in 1981, MTV is like most all the other cable channels, They stayed with their original purpose for a few years or so then they pulled the rug out from under you in favor of a new demographic. When MTV premiered it was geared towards people of basically the age it is today and older adults but things have changed since then, Reality shows have become dominant and the music of today isn't worth the effort for me to even bother so for those like you that are fine with today's MTV, I say enjoy it. I had my chance and for me this channel met it's death during the late 80's but at least I was smart enough to tape most of it.

"A new demographic?" Was there a time when MTV wasn't targeted primarily to the 18-25 age range? In the early years, there were some older VJs and the network was geared to a wider range of viewers, but since the late 80s, they've been pretty clear about who they're focusing on. With thousands of music videos from all eras of popular music on YouTube, including the newest videos from today's biggest names, the original concept of MTV has become terribly obsolete. I know it's a slap in the face of nostalgia, but that's just the way it is.

By new demographic I meant that the original viewers got older and were basically kicked out in the cold by MTV. Programming changed and music videos were soon regulated to late night hours. MTV may have been geared toward 18-25 year olds in 1981 but today I would say it's much younger, 13-25 would be a more reasonable estimate but no matter what age they're targeting you can bet that they don't give a damn about people in my age bracket. MTV has been obsolete for over 20 years as far as I'm concerned but you're right about youtube and other sources and even though I long for the days of the old MTV, It's nice to be able to watch a video when you want to and chances are they're not going to play anything from the 80's on today's MTV.

This is so sad. I grew up on MTV and as someone that recalls the glory days of MTV in the late 1980's and early 1990's i can say i am profoundly sad about this; but not sad because i had a feeling this was coming at some point. Seeing as that MTV had basically abandoned any sort of musical programming years ago.

I disagree - I don't think it's been obsolete for over 20 years, I think it's really with the advent of youtube, etc. Think back even to 1999-2000-2001 era when TRL was dominating the youth culture and MTV showed videos or at least music related programming often during the day. I remember in those days they had hours of music video blocks in the morning (not early morning, all the way till noon basically) plus they had shows like "Making the Video," "Say What Karaoke," etc. Even their less music-type programming were still shows like "Diary" that focused on the most popular music stars of the day. It has definitely been in the last 5 years that there was a shift away from "Music Television" - maybe it's been awhile since it was straight music videos but it was still "Music Television" into the 2000s

They might as well change the "MTV" part too, they can take away the words "Music Television" but MTV still means Music Television to ALOT of people.

They should go with "Anything BUT Music Television"

That's fine but I was speaking only for myself and for me MTV has been obsolete for over 20 years. There are those that are going to prefer today's MTV over the old and that's ok for some folks but not for me. When MTV ceased to be a 24/7 music video channel, I lost most all interest in it.

Why should they play music from the 80s? When they were showing music videos all day, they were showing then-contemporary videos, weren't they? I'm sure they might have had special blocks of classic performance videos from the 50s-70s, but most of their programming was of then-current music, right?

I don't understand why you feel like you were "kicked out in the cold." Their target audience is teens and 20somethings. Beginning at some point, that no longer included you.

Honestly, if MTV went back to their original format tomorrow and aired the best in current music videos, people would still be upset. Half of the anti-MTV people aren't mad because they no longer show videos all day, they're mad because they no longer show Madonna all day or Michael Jackson all day or other 80s music videos. The 80s are over. They've been over for 20 years now.
