Though Lindsey was cast as affable country hick Goober Pyle, he had a bachelors degree in bioscience! The Alabama native was a science teacher before he was an actor. His character was originally “Goober Beasley,” but the name quickly changed to match with his cousin, Gomer Pyle.

One of my favorite character actors who can play dramatic roles as easily as comedic. Of course he'll be best remembered as Goober Pyle but if you ever get a chance to see him on Alfred Hitchcock Presents/The Alfred Hitchcock Hour or The Twilight Zone you'll see what I mean as he gives an excellent performance in all.

I saw George in an episode of M*A*S*H as a redneck surgeon and he was the total opposite of his Goober character, good performance too.
