group of passionate Betty White fans wants to do more than thank her for being a friend:

They want to her to host Saturday Night Live.

Do you think Betty White would make a good 'Saturday Night Live' host?
CAPTIONJohn Shearer, Getty ImagesMore than 8,500 people (and counting) have joined a Facebook group called "Betty White to Host SNL (please)?" And while I'm usually not a big joiner, this is one cause I can fully support.

Why? Five quick reasons:

1. Betty White has never hosted Saturday Night Live. Can you believe that? The 88-year-old actress has been making many of us laugh our entire lives. The same can't be said for most SNL hosts this season (Megan Fox, Taylor Lautner, January Jones ...)

2. She's on a career high right now. The six-time Emmy winner and lifelong humanitarian just picked up a Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement award. She received raves for her supporting role in last year's The Proposal, and she has at least two films lined up for 2010.

3. Think of the sketch possibilities! White meets MacGruber! Clashes with the Target Lady! Dances on "What Up with That"! And that's not even mentioning the potential for Golden Girls hijinks.

4. TV needs more funny ladies. Forty years after The Mary Tyler Moore Show, there still aren't enough funny women -- particularly older women -- on television. (And when's the last time you saw one on late-night TV?) Throw White on there for 90 minutes, and the next thing you know, she'll be replacing Leno.

5. She'd be SNL's oldest host of all time. White would take the record from Ruth Gordon, who hosted when she was 80. (Also, an 80-year-old grandmother named Miskel Spillman hosted back in 1977, when the show held its first and only "Anyone Can Host" contest.)

I think she'd be a great choice. The show really does need a strong comedic woman; I'm not a huge fan of Wiig.
