Lost star Matthew Fox is "thrilled" the show is finally coming to an end - because he's tired of playing the same character.
The filming for the sixth and final series of Lost wrapped last year, and Fox now plans to take up to six months off work to spend quality time with his family. And he insists he can't wait to put his role as Dr. Jack Shepherd behind him. He tells the Britain's Live magazine, "I want a new life - I am thrilled Lost is finally over. I've spent five years as Dr. Jack Shepherd. It's been a crazy experience but I want more. I want to do films, I want to do theatre, I want to be different people. It's made my name and made me famous all over the world. I've won awards for it and it's possibly the best TV series that has ever been made, but nothing beats leaping back into the unknown. Filming the very last show was a mix of sadness and pure exhilaration for me." The final season of Lost hits TV screens on Tuesday. http://www.starpulse.com/news/index...._lost_is_over_ |

Matthew just never seemed to appreciate what he had. How many actors have disappeared or been typecast after doing a hit show? He was on Party of Five and he wasn't even the breakout star of that show. He's just always come across to me as being very ungrateful. I like his character on Lost though and I do wish him well.

I don't see that anything he said really disparaged the show at all. He seemed to enjoy his time there and said that the show had made him known the world over; and he said it might have been the best show ever made.
I think a lot of us don't realize that for actors to play the same character year after year is limiting for them. We of course would love to see them play it for a long time and we hate to hear them say they are happy to leave it behind, but (though I'm obviously no expert) actors get into the business to explore different types of characters. When they are pinned down to a character for a long time, even one they enjoy, one that's multi-dimensional, they are bound to get into a rut. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson both felt pretty much the same when they left The X-Files, and I was kind of upset at both of their attitudes for a bit, but I kind of came to understand what they meant. I agree with you about his character; I've always really liked Jack, and have defended him against hordes of Sawyer and Locke lovers on other forums, lol. And like you, I wish him all the best. |

its not like he couldn't have done movies or plays during the off-season - LOST was off the air and not filming for more than a year there wasn't it?

Regarding last night's episode, I always enjoy Jack's resolute refusal to be wedged into one of two narrow options. He managed to control the ultimatum the Others made to him regarding Ben's surgery. He surprised everyone with his plan to destroy them in the Season 3 finale. He chose (perhaps unwisely, but it was still a cool scene) to force Locke to let him stop Sayid from killing Ben, gambling that Locke wouldn't allow the counter to reach "zero". Other examples abound.
Last night his gambit with the pill (I won't spoil anything for those who didn't see it) continued this trend. The guy is not about to be bullied, his sticks to his morals and friends, and he's resourceful, too and I can't help but admire all of that. |
