Former Eagles All-Pro Tom Brookshier, who went on to become a familiar face on TV sports as well as half of the lead broadcast team on CBS' coverage of pro football, has died.

"Brookie," as he was known to his friends and fans, was 78. One of the most popular Eagles of all time, he had been battling cancer.

Brookshier, a hard-hitting cornerback, was a member of the Eagles 1960 championship team. The University of Colorado product made two Pro Bowls. His career was cut short by a devastating leg injury.

After he hung up his shoulder pads, Brookshier became a familiar face as the sports anchor on the local CBS affiliate, Channel 10.

He teamed with Pat Summerall for years as the lead broadcasting team on CBS' coverage of NFL games. They teamed for three Super Bowl telecasts.

And Brookshier also was a nascent voice on the sports talk radio scene in Philly, teaming with Angelo Cataldi 20 years ago on the "Brookie and the Rookie" morning show that opened the door to what is now 610 WIP Sportsradio.

Brookshier played for the Eagles from 1953 to 1961. The Eagles retired his number "40" in 1962, one of only seven players to have his number retired by the team.

He recorded 20 interceptions and had 8 fumble recoveries in his Eagles' career.

Andy Reid released the following statement earlier today:

"Tom Brookshier is one of all-time greats, both for what he did on the field and for the kind of man he was off the field. I will always remember him for his booming and bright personality. He had an uncanny love for life, a love for his family and a love for the game of football, especially for the Philadelphia Eagles. He bled green and I will always cherish our conversations and the relationship that we fostered throughout my tenure in Philadelphia. Our deepest condolences go out to his wife, Barbara, and the rest of the Brookshier family.”

We're running out of great ones.

I remember watching "This Week in Pro Football" back in the early 70s, way before ESPN. It was an hour-long show hosted by Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshire, and I believe it aired on Saturday evening (at least where I was, it was syndicated). It showed all of the NFL films highlights of the previous week's games. We wouldn't miss it!
