Anyone see his appearance? What did you think? I thought it was pretty good, a little more insight into things. Didn't understand what they meant by "how tv works'.

I thought the show was good. I will say that Jays not completely to blame, but he does have blood on his hands. This is the way I see it, Conan for 15+ years has always had to take a second chair to Jay because he came on earlier so got the first laughs than finally he gets a chance to be the host of The Tonight Show where he gets first chance to get the jokes in of the hot topics of the day. Then what does Jay & NBC do, they put conan once again in second chair. Maybe the ratings would have been better if Jay didnt take Conans spotlight. I think I understood what they meant buy "how tv works", I think they meant you can be #1(like Conan was in Late Night was for 15 years) but once your not doing good in the ratings, they dont care if you've been there for 20 years... your gone. Jays really NBCs little pet, they tell him to sign a contract for Conan to take over in 2009 & he does it even through he knows he doesnt want to. I hope to see Conan on Oprah ASAP. |

I still believe that NBC is mainly to blame - and they've treated both Jay AND Conan very shabbily. Sure, Jay's going back to 11:35, but has anyone really won here?

^ Yes, I know what you mean. It's a shame that all this happened - and I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of Jeff Zucker and the rest of the top brass at NBC.

NBC didn't want to lose Leno and they ended up losing Conan instead. Conan's camp says it's too soon for an interview right now. I'm glad Oprah has extended him an invitation to appear on her show, she's a class act.

Relax, I realize you meant to say that Conan hosted for the shortest period of time. There was a poll on Oprah's website. Before viewing this interview 67% of respondents supported Conan and 33% supported Jay. After viewing the interview 65% supported Conan and 35% supported Jay. So it seems Jay didn't change very many peoples opinions with this appearance.

...Oprah's interview, but there's this feeling that he's now "damaged goods" in viewers' eyes because of all the unwanted controversy surrounding the failure of his 10pm(et) show, and that he "pushed" Conan out of "THE TONIGHT SHOW" in order for NBC to regain its lost ratings (and revenue) at 11:35. And that no matter HOW Jay conducts himself in subsequent interviews about this entire mess, his popularity could suffer in the long run. NBC's hope that his ratings will be "magically" restored once he returns to late night in March is a longshot. Perhaps, in time, most people will forget about this "churning" period, and accept Jay at his old stand.
Look, AFTRA {American Federation of Radio and Television Artists} called a major strike against the broadcast networks in March 1967, and several major newscasters and hosts went on strike for several weeks- and Johnny Carson was one of their members who "didn't cross the picket line" when he was ordered to return to "THE TONIGHT SHOW" by NBC. Even after the strike was settled two weeks later, Johnny delayed his return because he suddenly decided he needed a raise. The network raised a big stink about holding him to his contract and suing him, but soon realized they needed him- and finally gave in, and Johnny returned on April 24th, with no damage to his reputation or popularity with viewers. But his producer Art Stark, who'd been with him as far back as the days of "WHO DO YOU TRUST?", did not leave with him. To Carson, that meant Stark was a "network man", and didn't care for his "disloyalty"- and he was soon fired. But....what if Jay's pre-May 2009 popularity on "TONIGHT" doesn't return?
