Default NBC Orders Additional Episodes, Does This Mean the Shows Won’t Be Cancelled?

In the wake of NBC’s cancellation of The Jay Leno Show, the network has a lot of time to fill on the primetime schedule. That spells good news for fans of many of the network’s shows.

NBC has handed out additional episode orders to five programs — Community, Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, Parks & Recreation, and Trauma.

Community received an order for three new installments, and Parks & Recreation and Law & Order: SVU each got two more. The season tally for each of the three shows will be 25 episodes.

Three more episodes of Law & Order have been ordered and that will bring that venerable program’s season total to 22.
Trauma, which was cancelled after 13 episodes, has been the benefactor of the peacock network’s need for content before and received an order for three more episodes in November. The show’s now received an order for four more, bringing the season total to 20 installments.

While this news is great for show fans, it’s not an indication that the shows will be renewed. It has more to do with the network’s need for additional original content and production schedules. Some of the network’s highest rated shows, like 30 Rock, didn’t get additional orders and they’re surely coming back.

Where do they stand? Law & Order has already been renewed for next season and SVU is sure to be renewed as well. Community and Parks & Recreation are on the bubble but seem likely to be renewed for at least 13 episodes, especially considering all of the other holes in NBC’s schedule. Trauma has an uphill battle if it’s going to get a second season order.

What do you think? Are you glad to hear that NBC will be airing fewer repeats? Are there other shows that you wish had gotten additional episode orders?

UPDATE: The Futon Critic has privately confirmed that the cast and crew of The Office will produce 25 installments for the season.

I don't mean to sound rude, but is it necessary to keep posting these articles written by tvseriesfinale.com? For one, their information is usually inaccurate and pointless. This entire article is pointless, really. These episodes are being ordered merely to fill the gaps. Without Leno, NBC has some extra cash to throw around, and instead of airing SVU repeats and Dateline during these 5 hours, they went with more original programming. Trauma will likely still remain cancelled at the end of the season, and Mercy will join it (it's ratings are horrendous as of late). Parks & Recreation will probably be canned as well, while Community will return.

Parks and Recreation is HILARIOUS and should be renewed if NBC has nothing else to air next season. If they find something, then yes, I don't think it will be renewed due to its low ratings.

Law and Order: SVU is my favorite Law and Order series, and will for sure be back.

Law and Order is also pretty good, and I'm guessing it will return.

I'm really starting to like Community, but not my favorite NBC show.

Could care less about Trauma, I stopped watching after episode one.

It was, then NBC ordered 3 additional episodes a few months back. Then NBC decided to give it 4 more episodes for a total of 20 episodes.

well, if "COMMUNITY" IS renewed, my cousin; who produces it; will be dissapointed. He REALLY HATES doing it, he says some of the cast members aren't the nicest people in the world and that Chevy Chase is a real ******.
He also worked on "THAT 70S SHOW" & "3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN" and says that some of the "70S" cast was the same way, but not the 3RD ROCK" cast.

Parks and Recreation has improved a lot since last year. I also think Community is pretty good.

Somehow the 3rd Rock cast always seemed like a great bunch of folks, both on screen and off. I'm glad that your cousin has confirmed it for us!!

Both Jane Curtin and John Lithgow have always been class acts. And Kristen Johnston has always seemed very nice and very level headed whenever I've seen her interviewed. French Stewart has always been a consumate professional throughout his career and Joseph Gordon-Levitt has always struck me as mature beyond his years. So I'm not surprised to hear this about the 3rd Rock cast.

I tried to watch "Community" because I really like Joel McHale, but I just didn't like it at all. However, I'm glad that he's been so successful. Maybe NBC is trying to gain viewership by ordering additional episodes, but you never know with them. They might be wanting to have new shows to air before or after the Olympics because for sure viewership will go down when they are over.
