Cool The Doobie Brothers

I recently watched the 2nd season of What's Happening on DVD. Included in this season is the two part episode in which Rerun is conned into bootlegging a Doobie Brothers concert. Watching this episode reminded me how good the Doobie Brothers music is and how much I enjoy listening to it. Ever since watching this episode I want to hear some funky Dixie land (pretty mama come and take me by the hand)!

I haven't seen that one in years, Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Rerun the one trying to record their concert and when he started jumping up and down the tape recorder fell out of his coat pocket?

Yes, you've got it exactly right Charles. And you should see the look on his face when the tape recorder fell out!

When Rerun did this deed, he had no idea that he was doing anything bad. He was a victim of his own inocence and ignorance as well as other peoples' corupption.

What's even funnier is that, at a real concert, no one would have noticed because it would be too dark and the music too loud. Everything just stops dead and the band look like they've suffered the ultimate betrayal.

Yes, bootlegging was a major issue concerning our youth in the '70s. Did the recording industry association pay them to do an episode on bootlegging?

Best lines of the show:

"I'm Roger Thomas. Which Doobie you be?"

And then, after bassist Tiran Porter explains that the group are like "brothers" -"...kind of like how you depend on your brother Rog."

Dee: "You're in big trouble."

Cool

You're right. At a real concert it would be too dark and too loud for anyone to notice a tape recorder falling out. Even a big reel to reel tape recorder like Rerun was using. And there were some great lines in this episode! And I still can't figure out how Rog's high school got an A list group like the Doobie Brothers to play a fund raiser concert!

And bootlegging still continues today. Well back then it was tape recorders. Today people sneak video cameras into concerts. And even movie theaters.

Recording a movie off a screen in a theater isn't bootlegging, it's piracy. And frankly, there's no movie I need to have on DVD so badly that I can't wait for the official release. Yeah, I want a crappy copy shot off a movie screen with people making comments! No thanks!

As for bootlegging, as a music collector who bought several bootlegs back in the day, the good thing now is that there's no excuse to pay big bucks for them anymore. With file sharing and trading on chat rooms, bootlegs can be easily obtained for little or no money. Which is the way it should be.

And for anyone who says that bootlegging deprives artists of income, it's a bogus argument. Why? One, the artists and/or their labels are not making these recordings available to the avid fans who want them. Two, anyone who buys (or downloads) bootlegs already owns all the official recordings, so the artist has gotten paid for those.
