In central Oklahoma, there were two more earthquakes around 9 am. One was at 9:18am and the second was at 9:28. The town of Jones, OK now has had 28 earthquakes since March 2009. The usual amount of earthquakes in Oklahoma that can be felt are two, but this last year Oklahoma has had 28.

The first earthquake was recorded by the USGS at 4.0 on the Richter scale, and the second was recorded at 3.8 on the Richter scale. People in Oklahoma are seasoned tornado folks, but earthquakes are a rarity, but not this year. Midwest City, OKlahoma police reported 150 phone calls of people reporting shaking cabinets, windows, and dishes. The earthquakes were reported as sounding like thunder. One lady described the eartquake as, "A tremor or earthquake."

You can tell, Oklahomans are not used to earthquakes, and the increased number is even more rare. Earthquakes of this magnitude and frequency are causing concern in Oklahoma.

Students in one Oklahoma school, a private school called Cassidy, recorded the Haitian earthquake.

(CNN) -- An earthquake with preliminary magnitude of 5.6 struck eastern Venezuela on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake's epicenter was about 25 miles from Carupano, near the Caribbean coast in northeastern Venezuela, the agency said. It was 7 miles deep.

The geological survey revised its estimates after initially reporting the quake as having a 5.7 magnitude and an epicenter slightly closer to Carupano. The revised location is about 235 miles east of the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Nerves rattled, but little else, in 2 Okla. quakes
The Associated Press
Friday, January 15, 2010

JONES, Okla. — Two small earthquakes shook central Oklahoma minutes apart Friday, rattling nerves but little else. Seismologists said a series of temblors dating to last summer were no cause for alarm.

"We've already got tornadoes in Oklahoma. Let's leave the earthquakes for California," said Carlos Lozano of nearby Choctaw. He said he initially believed a jet taking off from the Tinker Air Force Base near Oklahoma City was to blame.

"It was a pretty large boom," Lozano said. "You could hear the house creaking. I'm sure it's not good for the walls or the foundation."

A quake of magnitude 4.0 at 9:18 a.m. was Oklahoma's strongest temblor since a 1998 earthquake near Lawton, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

An aftershock of magnitude 3.8 followed eight minutes later Friday. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from either. Quakes of magnitude 2.5 to 3 are generally the smallest felt by people.

"When they just keep doing it, it scares me," said Brenda Wright, visiting the Jones Drug Store. "Glasses were shaking in the cabinets and I lost my balance and went sideways. I thought the trailer was going to come off its blocks."

The Jones area, about 15 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, has been the epicenter of 16 quakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater since June. A quake Thursday measured magnitude 3.3.

Seismologist Austin Holland of the Oklahoma Geological Survey in Norman said there was no reason to believe the uptick is a sign that "the big one is coming."

Researchers hoped to place equipment to determine why the area is seeing more seismic activity.

"It is very unusual," he said. "Earthquakes of these sizes don't need big faults. They can occur on very small fractures in the earth."

Ryan Dragg, working on the ninth floor of the VA Medical Center in Oklahoma City, said he was jolted by the quake and that he and a co-worker briefly left the building.

"We looked at each other and said, 'Let's go outside,'" Dragg said. "I don't know proper protocol for earthquakes in Oklahoma."

Quake hits Venezuela

WASHINGTON - AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 5.6 on the moment magnitude scale struck eastern Venezuela on Friday, US seismologists and Venezuelan officials said, just three days after a massive quake devastated Haiti.

Local authorities reported no immediate victims or damage. The Venezuelan Foundation of Seismological Research (FUNVISIS) said the quake measured 5.4 on the Richter scale.

The temblor hit at 1.30pm (1800 GMT, 12am Singapore time) at a depth of 11.7km, in an uninhabited jungle area in the north-eastern state of Sucre, according to the US Geological Survey.

Its epicentre was 40km south-west of Carupano and 375km east of the capital Caracas, on a part of the Venezuelan mainland close to the heavily touristed island of Isla Margarita.

That placed it around 1,300km from the earthquake in Haiti that on Tuesday devastated that country's capital, Port-au-Prince. 'Thank God there are no losses,' the governor of Sucre state, Enrique Maestre, said.

The seismic upheaval was felt in Sucre's main city of Cumana, and in the town of Curiaco, which in 1997 was rocked by a quake that left a hundred dead and 200 injured. -- AFP

Which probably means Hugo Chavez survived.
