Interesting podcast. Ladd pretty much confirmed that the only reason Polly Holliday was leaving "Alice" was that she and Lavin didn't get along. It seems like it wasn't a very enjoyable time for Ms. Ladd either, but she says it was "definitely a learning experience". Thanks for posting, Monika! ;-)

That was GREAT, thank you. A very cool site, as well.
It's very telling that Ladd mentions Polly Holliday being "a lovely actress", and does not mention Linda Lavin's name at all. I think Linda is VERY lucky that the two ladies that she chose to get Ego Crazy on turned out to be such kind, gentle women. I find it sad, genuinely. Lavin is so damn talented. There was no need to be so jealous, to feel so threatened. It would be a good thing if she could own up to that behavior, someday. She really hurt people. |

My pleasure! I love On Screen & Beyond because they interview so many cool, retro stars.

I remember watching the E True Hollywood Story episode about ALICE and Diane said that she was brought in around the time that Polly Holliday was completing her last couple of shows and they happened to pass each other one day. Polly made a comment something along the lines of the egos on the set being a challenge to deal with on a daily basis. Diane was only on the show for a short time when she came to realize exactly what Polly had meant.
I do know that Diane would only take the role if they agreed to sign her to just one season (mid-1980 to mid-1981). Typically, she would have been bound by a 5-year contract. She made it clear that she was not happy with her time on the show, either. |

I wonder how LL got along with the Barney Miller cast - it probably was a whole other dynamic, since everyone in that cast were guys. Plus she was a recurring character. I guess she and Hal Linden got along, because she appeared on one of his TV specials in 1979.
