Default The series came about...

...because of the success of "THE RICHARD PRYOR SPECIAL?", which drew good ratings on NBC in early 1977. Naturally, the network wanted Pryor to host a weekly variety series (something along the lines of Carol Burnett, they figured). But there were disagreements as to how many segments Pryor was willing to tape [10 were suggested; only five were produced], and certain sketches were censored, including part of Richard's opening monologue in the first show in which he declared, on the subject of censorship, he wasn't giving up anything- cut to a full shot of Pryor in a body stocking (suggesting nudity); this, of course, was deleted by the network before it ever aired [but I believe it appears intact on the DVD]. And there was the fact that NBC supposedly promised him he'd appear in a later time period- 9:00pm(et), but scheduled him on Tuesdays at 8, directly opposite the two biggest TV shows at that time: ABC's "HAPPY DAYS" and "LAVERNE & SHIRLEY". Either they knew his show wasn't worth the trouble, and "threw him to the wolves", or they honestly believed viewers wanted an alternative on Tuesday nights {I believe it was the former}. In any case, Pryor was gone after five weeks in October 1977...and NBC went on to suffer its worst season yet (yeah, that'll show 'em!!).

Exciting news, I wonder though will the episodes of 'Flip Wilson" will be the one hour versions or terribily edited syndicated half hour versions?

The production numbers for Flip Wilson episodes (ten of them) airing on TV One have been posted on the blog. If you have an episode guide, you can check.

Excellent news, but I don't see #324 with Jacksons...though they are airing both of their airings with them. I did some research on it. Here are the episodes TV One is airing:

#101: David Frost, James Brown, The Muppets
#103: Lily Tomlin, Redd Foxx, The Temptations, Roger Miller
#111: Stevie Wonder, Connie Stevens, John Byner, Johnny Brown
#206: David Frost, The Supremes, Willie Tyler & Lester
#208: The Jackson 5, Lily Tomlin, Dr. David Rueben
#218: George Carlin, Aretha Franklin, Dom Deluise
#306: Diana Sands, David Steinberg, The Jackson 5
#307: Carol Channing, Ed Asner, Donny Hathaway
#324: Burns & Schreiber, Ruth Buzzi, The Supremes
#408: Lee Grant, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Andrew Johnson, Hank Aaron
