Remember the story about the frozen apeman? And the guy replaced it with a fake and went on the run? Was this case ruled a hoax or what?

I don't think anyones found the specimen yet. Isn't it still missing? If that's the case, we may never determin it;s authenticity.
BTW, it should be pointed out that it wouldn;t be that big a stretch if the thing was real. It's not like finding a bigfoot corpse or anything. |

I'd be surprised if it was a hoax and made to really look authentic way back when it was first displayed as a side show attraction. The one thing I'll never get about the the segment that aired other than the entire mystery of the Iceman, is the one guy who went to the attraction as a boy and managed to bring along a man with a good amount of credibility in some sort of field like anthropology or "cryptozoology", who was first skeptical about the entire thing but after he saw the specimen he came out and barely spoke to the kid and just darted. It's almost as if that guy's ego was really hurt bad or something. Very weird.

This reminds me of an image which has appeared in Something Wicked This Way Comes and possibly other works by Ray Bradbury. A carnival would come into town exhibiting a young woman frozen in a large block of ice. Days later, the ice would be gone and the same young woman would be seen walking around, alive and well. I asked him where he got the idea for that particular image and he said it had been done at early carnivals, giving no hints as to what may have been done or how.
My best guess is a replica was made resembling one of the carnival workers and frozen in ice. This would take considerable doing, hiring an artist to create an image probably in wax, or at the very least making up an actress to as nearly as possible resemble an already-created image, and then having the means to keep it frozen while traveling in the 1920s, a time when people didn't normally even keep ice cream around. I wonder if the iceman can have been produced in a similar way, by a talented enough artist to fool scientists, or whether it really was some strange ape or deformed human? Unfortunately no samples were taken for testing and like "the late John Wilkes Booth," the thing disappeared. |

Well, the fake Bigfoot a few years back smelled due to some meat placed enough to the outside of the ice to spoil, but this thing seemed to have other characteristics to recommend it as real. The carnival example was put forth to show how something frozen in ice can be deceiving if done right, due to masking/distorting effects of the ice.

You're kidding! This is awesome. I hope that they do testing on it soon.
So, Hansen himself killed this thing? Yikes. No wonder he made it disappear. Then again, my brain goes to the darkest scenario in which the creature is found to be a hirsute, modern human who was living a hermit's life in the woods.

I've been looking at this board for a while, but never bothered registering.
I recall the segment on UM, it was interesting that the exhibit vanished. It's interesting now that it has appeared again. Nice to know this turned up, I wouldn't have heard about ti had it not been for stopping by this message board. I'd post a url, but, it tells me I need 5 posts to do so. Anyway, there is a video out there that includes photos from when this was listed for sale on ebay. That video also includes in the description some notes about the condition of the freezer, the compressor needs to be replaced/repaired.. Also, the website for a fox channel in Austin has a 3min segment online, with an interview with the current owner, who talks about how he bought it on ebay, etc. |
