AOL Interviews Lisa Kudrow On "Cougar Town" Guest-Appearance and Web Series

Best known as ditzy blonde Phoebe Buffay on seminal sitcom Friends, Lisa Kudrow has continued her post-Friends career not only in popular films (P.S. I Love You, Powder Blue) but also taking on production and development roles, first with the short-lived HBO show The Comeback and now with an online series called Web Therapy.

Kudrow pulled in her old friend Courteney Cox for a guest spot on Web Therapy and now she's returning the favor by appearing on Cougar Town this week.

Kudrow plays Dr. Amy Evans, a dermatologist who gives Jules Cobb a hard time about her decision to try and look younger.


Inside TV talked to Kudrow about Web Therapy, producing shows and working with her Friend again.



Cougar culture. It's big stuff these days.

Yeah, I guess so. A lot of women look good [laughs]. Like Courteney. But she's not so predatory, Courteney's character. Right?


Her character is a very self-aware, and real cougars don't seem very self aware at all. Your role is that of an evil dermatologist?

Very mean and insensitive.


Sadistic in any way?

Maybe. She's pretty merciless with the comments, like "God, you have weird skin."


It seems like the dermatologist is a sort of lifeline to older women who are trying to appeal to younger men.

Well, now women in their 20s are getting botox. So they don't ever develop wrinkles.



I don't have any experience with Botox. It's the botulism that scares me.

Me too! Did you know it crosses the blood brain barrier? It gets into the brain.



That seems like it can't be a very good thing.

It does to me too! They don't know what it does in there, but they've found it in brains. Well, it's not actually botulism, it's a byproduct of botulism or a piece of botulism.

But it has the same effect, just on a smaller scale. It paralyzes muscle.




So what are you doing with Courteney in the scenes you shot?

Oh, you know, giving her Botox. And I don't do that, so it looks so obvious that I don't.

But the character says "I'm secure enough as a woman, that I don't inject poison into my head." But I'm actually just too afraid.




Both of you have been pretty hands-on with the creation and production of shows since you both left Friends.

Was getting back on the set pretty easy?

Well, you're a guest on someone else's set so you have to behave accordingly. Everyone is really nice, it's not tense. It was strange, it seemed like we never stopped.

It was very natural to be working together, even though we're doing very different characters. It felt like, "That's right, there you are, across from me with a camera on."




How's Web Therapy going?

Good! We're trying to figure out what our season three will be. We left off with her husband going to run for congress.

So, we're going to have something with her on the campaign trail.




Are you finding that using the internet for a show is a good outlet?

Creatively, we can do whatever we want. It's unbelievable.




I was sad to see The Comeback not come back.

Oh really? I know, we're hearing from a lot of people. It made a lot of top 10 of the decade lists, [like] Newsweek. It was a great show and all they had to do was a few more. But it was just too painful to watch.

I love that Michael Patrick King went on to direct one of the biggest hits ever, Sex and the City. He knows what he's doing.




What else have you been watching lately?

I love 30 Rock. I think that's just so funny. What have you been watching?



I loved the latest season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

And I feel like you all couldn't do something like what Larry David and Seinfeld did with Friends.

Yeah, that was a great way to do it. It was perfect.

Wasn't it interesting to watch them rehearsing Seinfeld and saying their lines? And they addressed everything that's been on your mind.
