Cougar Town Gets Petty - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Consider Cougar TownCougar Town’s Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers obsession explained: Cocreator Bill Lawrence is a rock geek. Keen-eyed viewers may have noticed that each episode—“Don’t Come Around Here No More,” “Don’t Do Me Like That,” to name a few—is titled after a Petty song. “I am such a huge fan,” says Lawrence. “The titles combine my favorite artist with small-town Florida [the series’ setting], which is what the characters on this show would dig.” (Lawrence, like Petty, has roots in rural Florida.) So why haven’t we yet heard any Heartbreakers tunes on the show? “Petty songs are pricey!” Lawrence says. “But we’ll use one before the season is up.”

Viewers can also expect more rock-based humor, like the recent scene of Bobby, Andy and Grayson—sans shirts—shooting hoops to the tune of Kenny Loggins’ “Playing With the Boys.” “I’m a believer in using music for comedy bits,” Lawrence says, promising an upcoming scene featuring REO Speedwagon’s “Keep on Loving You.” But Cougar isn’t all about the oldies—the series has used songs from Florence & the Machine and Dashboard Confessional, too. “I’m one of the only 40-year-old guys who knows as much about indie music as the 20-year-old hipsters,” Lawrence jokes. But Petty remains his true love. “The goal is to have a beer with Tom Petty. And if I can make that work, my career in TV will be worthwhile.”
