I just found this on YouTube - this is one of my local news programs, WJW-8 (then a CBS affiliate, now a FOX affiliate) reporting on the plane crash.

The image of seeing that plane burning on TV Jan. 1, 1986, is forever etched in my brain so I can't bring myself to click on it, either.

I remember when this happened. A real tragedy. I thought I could bring myself to watch that clip, but I couldnt. I had to turn it off.

Thankfully, they don't show much of the plane. Most of it is stock footage of O&H and an interview he did later in life, plus a clip of him singing Garden Party.

Ironically, I saw Nelson at a concert in Dubuque, Iowa just one month before he died. It was a really good show, and I'm glad I was able to see him before he passed. I remember being really shocked and saddened by the news.

It's hard to believe that he'd be 69 today had he lived.

I can honestly say that the news of his death affected me more than hearing of the death(s) of other celebs. I was at a New Year's Eve party and right after my boyfriend and I got there, one of the people we were meeting there had the strangest look on her face when we walked up. First thing out of her mouth: "Did you hear about Ricky Nelson?" (I hadn't) and I just said. "Oh...no..." My stomach dropped and I just stood there and asked, "Well.. how do they know it was him?" It didn't seem right, you know? The first mental image that kept going through my head was when he was on SNL, singing "Dream Lover."

*grabs another tissue*

I was just 6 when he died, so I didn't know of him then. I do share the same birthday with Matthew and Gunnar (September 20) although they are 12 years older than me.

Monika thank you for this link. While it is sad and poignant, it does give us another memory of a fine and talented man and actor. He was something special.

I was 6 when Rick Nelson died. I remember watching a movie on TV with my parents on New Years Eve, and the bottom of the screen the news scrolled across the TV and both parents just screaming "Oh My God" and maybe even crying. At the time I didn't understand why, or even who Ricky Nelson was, but even being that young that vivid image of their reaction I can recall like it was 10 minutes ago.

As I've grown older, and people who I watched on TV have passed on, I now know how sad and shocked they felt when it happened. What a tragic lost.

about them doing drugs on the plane that night! ,they were NOT doing drugs on that plane! I can't remember what I was doing when I heard that Ricky Nelson died.
