All,
I'm hoping that someone will be able to help me. I'm assisting in a murder investigation. In the course of this investigation, I have spoken to a woman ("Mary") who is adamant that she saw a prime suspect in my case at the end of an Unsolved Mysteries segment. Mary says that she was watching the show in the early 90's, "before the show began doing a lot of reruns." She said that the show definitely did not run in the first season, and beleives it most likely would have been somewhere in seasons 2 through 5. Mary said that the segment she saw focused on a murder that took place somewhere "down South" - of course, she lives in WI, so that could be anywhere. The murder involved either tying or hanging a woman from a tree in some fashion (chains, rope, etc). At the end of the segment, there was a composite sketch that was shown that looked exactly like a prime suspect in the WI case that she knew. The show also gave a description of the person - 6'1" to 6'5", sturdy build, dark hair. That's all the detail that she can remember about the case. I know the description is sketchy, but if this case sounds familiar at all to any of the fans of the show, I'd love to get your input. I've tried to contact Unsolved Mysteries directly, but have encountered some resistance there to assist me. You can either post here on the board or contact me directly at looieprima@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance for any help. |

Um, I know of one segment they showed about a murder that took place by a tree like you described. Though I dont know if its the one your talking, it was the case of Ethel Kidd. It took place in Orange County, Virginia. The segment also stated something about the community of Burr Hill. Basically, Ethel was killed on Wed April 12, 1989 and her killer tied her to a tree with ropes in a way for her to be found. She was raped and the segment also stated that she might have been kept in a refrigerator due to the physical appearence of the body. There was an update on the segment and the killer was identified somehow but he was already in jail for another crime. Thats the only segment I can recall from what you wrote down. Hope this helps

I do not recall the name of the man who was charged with Ethel Kidd's murder but I do remember that he was arrested in Tennessee for bank robbery and he was connected to the murder. I wish I had more details on this particular case.

I wonder if this was the person that gave the tip that led to the capture of the killer. I was disappointed by the shoddy update Lifetime gave. They simply said that a Lifetime viewer phoned in a tip that led to the capture of the killer, who was already in jail.

Is it just me, or haven't they aired the update to the Ethel Kidd story on Lifetime recently? I thought it went into pretty great detail about how they used the DNA that they found from the road atlas, along with the handwriting samples to convict Ethel Kidd's killer. Didn't he live just down the road from her, too?

To answer your question, LookslikeCRicci, I believe they did say the killer did live down the road from Ethel. If not, I'm certain they said he lived in Burr Hill, which was a tiny village. He had inexplicably left the area around the time of Ethel's murder.
This was such a sad case. Ethel had left the high-crime area of D.C., only to run into foul play in a seemingly safe small country town.

I think I can really help you here. I actually lived Orange Va. when this happened. You may find this real interesting. The guy that was convicted in this case was caught in Tennesse. So I think there is a big southern connection for you. Oh here is something amusing: My college proffesor was in the re-enactment. His name
r. Kahn.(Yes it's pronounced Con.)Battlec2
