John Stamos was the victim of a $680,000 extortion attempt, EW has confirmed. Documents first obtained by TheSmokingGun.com refer to the victim only as “Mr. X, an actor,” but it was the TV and Broadway star who was told to either pay up or have photos of him from a 2004 party in Florida that would allegedly “cause harm to his reputation” released to the media.

“John Stamos was the target of an extortion attempt,” Stamos’ rep Matt Polk says in a statement. “The U.S. Attorney and the FBI handled the investigation swiftly and with great expertise. Since this is a pending federal criminal prosecution, John is not at liberty to discuss the matter at this time. The photos in question are photos of John posing with fans. At the conclusion of the investigation and hearing, the photos will be available and the public will be able to see that the photos are simply John posing with fans.”

Per the FBI affidavit on TSG, Allison Coss, 23, and Scott Sippola, 30, were arrested last week after an undercover FBI agent posed as one of Stamos’ representatives making the money drop in a Michigan airport, and their home was searched. Authorities found photos of Stamos as well as the actor’s cell phone number and the names and numbers of three tabloids.
