TV Update: CBS Announces Stephen King's "Under the Dome" Premiere Date

TV: Steven Spielberg and Stephen King Team for Under the Dome
Friday, November 20, 2009
By: MrDisgusting

It's a potent combination: Steven + Stephen.

Steven Spielberg and Stephen King are joining forces to develop a limited series based on King's just-released supernatural thriller "Under the Dome." DreamWorks TV has optioned the book and is looking to set it up as an event series, likely for cable.

You can read all of the plans below.

DreamWorks principal Stacey Snider was key in bringing the project to the company.

Spielberg, King and Snider will exec produce along with DreamWorks TV chiefs Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey.Book, which has earned strong reviews as a return to form for the prolific author, revolves around the drama that unfolds after an invisible force field suddenly descends on a small vacation town in Maine. As the locals fight for their survival, the town descends into warring factions led by enigmatic characters.

DreamWorks is starting to meet with writers for the project. The plan is to set a writer before shopping the skein to prospective buyers.

Spielberg and King have worked together in the past, developing a screen adaptation of King's 1984 novel "The Talisman," on which Spielberg has had the option for more than 20 years.

That project has been developed as a feature, and it came close to being done as a mini for TNT a few years ago until it was tabled for budgetary reasons.

The "Dome" deal continues a burst of activity on the smallscreen side for Spielberg and DreamWorks TV.

Among the high-profile projects in the works is a series about the development of a fictional Broadway tuner for Showtime. Another Showtime contender is a costume-drama revolving around the Borgia clan, penned by Neil Jordan and with Robert Zemeckis also producing.

DreamWorks TV also produces the pay cabler's dramedy "United States of Tara," for which star Toni Collette won the lead comedy actress Emmy in September. "Tara" bows its sophomore season in March.

Wow! I never knew they had worked together.
Steven Spielberg, I like him, but don't care for Steven King.

I like that image, though, btw.

Yeah, they worked together in the past though the project never happened.

That photo is the cover of King's new novel Under the Dome.

Monday, May 23, 2011
By: MrDisgusting

In a new article over at Variety, they reveal that "The River" writer Michael Green is at work adapting the Stephen King tome Under the Dome in preparation for DreamWorks TV to shop to broadcast and cable buyers in a few months.

The book goes a little something like this:

"Just down Route 119 in Chester’s Mill, Maine, all hell is about to break loose... On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day, a small town is suddenly and inexplicably sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field."

I still want to see The Talisman come to TV (or anything else for that matter) - it is usually cited as a favorite among Stephen King fans.

CBS Orders Stephen King's "Under the Dome"
Nov 29, 2012
by Sadie Gennis

CBS is moving forward with "Under the Dome", a drama based on Stephen King's 2009 novel, for the upcoming summer 2013 season. The network requested a straight-to-season order of 13 episodes of the science fiction series.

"This is a great novel coming to the television screen with outstanding auspices and in-season production values to create a summer programming event," Nina Tassler, president of CBS Entertainment, said in a statement.

"We're excited to transport audiences Under the Dome and into the extraordinary world that Stephen King has imagined."

The serialized drama, which will be produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, tells the story of a small New England town that becomes sealed off from the world by an over-sized transparent dome (much like in The Simpsons Movie). But instead of running around with Spider Pig, the town's inhabitants are faced with dire and deadly circumstances due to the dome's arrival.

"Under the Dome" will follow the citizen's survival as they try to learn more about the dome and how to get rid of it.

Simon & Schuster, who printed King's original novel, will cross-promote Under the Dome along with CBS. In preparation for the show's summer premiere, Under the Dome will be re-released in paperback and electronic editions in April 2013.

After each episode, CBS will also make a multi-platform window available tied to the broadcast.

Niels Arden Oplev, who directed the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, will helm the first episode.

King, Neal Baer, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank and Stacey Snider join "Lost's" Brian K. Vaughan, who wrote the adaptation, as executive producers.
