Country music veteran WYNONNA JUDD has hit out Country Music Association (CMA) officials for naming TAYLOR SWIFT Entertainer of the Year, insisting it's "too much too soon" for the teenage star.
The Love Story hitmaker, 19, made history at the CMA Awards on Wednesday night (11Nov09) when she became the youngest person ever to win the prestigious accolade. Swift stole the Nashville, Tennessee show by taking home gold in every category she was nominated in, including Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year for Fearless and Music Video of the Year for Love Story. But Judd, 45, is not convinced the singer fully deserves to win the award at such a young age - because she will have nothing to aim for in her career if she lands all the big prizes so early on in life. She tells USA Today newspaper, "You want my honest comment? It's too much too soon. Time is God's way of keeping everything from happening at once. It's just too much of a good thing too soon. "My thing is, being a home-school mum, I want kids to earn it, and I think some time... 'cause mum and I rode in a car for the first year of our career to visit radio stations. There was a making of the star, there was a rising up, and the fans went with us. "Now it's over coffee breaks, the success, almost. You have to play catch up... It's like the girl who wins an Oscar and she's under 20. What do you do from here?" http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf...-award_1122176 |

Wynonna said that the night of the CMA's, and posted this on her site the following day:
"I understand that my comment about Taylor Swift’s Entertainer of the Year nomination came across as a negative statement. My intent was not to take anything away from her talent and contributions to the country music industry…all of which are truly unprecedented for an artist of ANY age. Taylor is a beautiful, hard working young woman that deserves the success she has had and I support her as an artist and as a woman in the business." I disagree with how she stated it, but I do agree that Taylor has a LOT to live up to now. George Strait also had negative comments about Taylor's win. |

IMO, she shouldn't have won anything because her music is soooooo not country music. I honestly don't get how anyone could say that "You Belong with Me" is country. It's notttt.

This reminds me of the brouhaha back in the 1970s regarding Olivia Newton-John. I found this on wikipedia, but have read the story in other music books (as well as a TV interview I saw with ONJ) so I can attest to its authenticity.
Newton-John's country success was reviled by purists who believed a foreigner singing country-flavored pop music did not belong in country music. In addition to her Grammy for "Let Me Be There," Newton-John was also named the Country Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year in 1974, defeating nominees Loretta Lynn, Canadian Anne Murray, Dolly Parton, and Tanya Tucker, all established country music artists. Newton-John's win outraged many country artists leading to the formation of the short-lived Association of Country Entertainers (ACE). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivia_Newton-John |
