Eek Bruce Springsteen Screams Out, "Hello, Ohio!" in Michigan

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (AP) -- Want to get away, Boss?

Bruce Springsteen bellowed "Hello, Ohio!" to his fans at the Auburn Hills Palace. That's in Michigan.

The 60-year-old rock legend referred to the neighboring state several times Friday night until E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt whispered in his ear.

A visibly embarrassed Springsteen grinned and said such a mistake was "every front man's nightmare."

The Detroit Free Press says Springsteen rocked the forgiving audience for nearly three hours with new and old hits, including a complete performance of his album "Born to Run."

Lol

Yes, I saw that on the local news last night. Bruce and the band DID perform in Cleveland a few days ago, so maybe that's what caused the confusion.

Bruce definitely made up for it with the show he gave. He joked about it for the rest of the night. At one point he kept saying, "Where am I?!" to get the audience reaction of "DETROIT!"

Oh, you were there, Michael? Sounds like it was a fun show, and that he made a lemon into lemonade.

Yep, it was an amazing show. I'm sure he didn't expect that it would make world news.

E Street’s Van Zandt on Bruce Springsteen’s “Ohio” Blunder: “He Made a Great Joke Out of It”
11/15/09, 7:30 pm EST

After nearly two solid years on the road, Bruce Springsteen finally forgot where he was on Friday night. While playing at Michigan’s Palace of Auburn Hills, he made three separate references to Ohio before E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt had to tell him where he was.

The Spinal Tap-esque gaffe led to headlines across the globe this weekend, so this afternoon while chatting with Van Zandt for a tour wrap-up piece in the next issue of Rolling Stone, we asked him what happened. Here’s what he said:

“The first time I was like ‘Did I just hear that?’ The second time I looked at [bassist] Garry [Tallent] and said, ‘Did you hear what I just heard?’ At that point I knew I had to get Bruce’s attention, but I couldn’t get it through the rest of ‘Wrecking Ball.’ There was no time to really have that conversation [laughs hysterically]. I’m like, ‘Please, God, don’t give him a chance to do it again before I get a chance to talk to him.’ Sure enough, he did it a third time and I’m like, ‘That’s it. This crowd is about to rebel. They’re going to attack us!’ I just grabbed him and said, ‘You don’t realize it, but you’re saying Ohio and we’re in Michigan.’ He was like ‘What!?’

He just goes to a place onstage. At certain times he’s down on earth where we can have a conversation and a lot of the times he’s not. It’s a full adrenaline rush where you can’t have a conversation. I looked him right in the eye and he knew I wasn’t just saying something casual. It took him two or three times for him to come down to earth and hear what I was saying. He made a great joke out of it. He said, ‘I’ve been worried my whole life I’m going to do that and I finally did that.’ I guess the last gig was Cleveland. Maybe it was that. He didn’t have the city wrong. In his mind he knew he was in Detroit, but somehow Detroit wound up in Ohio for a minute.”

Yep, it does! Traveling from city to city so much, I bet a lot of artists have to be reminded where they are at times.

Great article! This story reminds me about an article I read about Michael Damian from Y&R in Soap Opera Digest years ago. He was doing a concert and yelled to the audience, "Hello, Cleveland!" and there was no response from the audience whatsover. He then said to one of this bandmates, "Uh, where the &%$# are we? Detroit, oh, no wonder."

That's funny. Bruce came on stage saying, "Good evening, Ohio." Then he quickly said, "Good evening, Detroit." So at that point, I wasn't sure if he was just joking, or if he made a mistake and quickly corrected himself. Turns out I was wrong on both, because he still thought he was in Ohio.

I know - I don't think I could do it. Going from city to city, time zone to time zone, country to country...it makes me tired just thinking about it!!

Bruce is still making light of the issue by saying, "Good evening, Ohio" in Milwaukee tonight.

It could be worse. At least he wasn't playing in Ann Arbor, yelling "Hello Ohio!," there would be dangerous.
