Festivus - Going Beyond the Show - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

I'm a huge Seinfeld fan.

I've always though the show was hilarious, and one of my favorite episodes is the classic where we learn about Festivus.

After stumbling on this article (and buying a Festivus t-shirt), A Festivus for the Rest of Us, I went and did some searching.

It's amazing how big a fake holiday like Festivus has become. Families, organizations, colleges and even cities now celebrate Festivus just as they would Christmas.

Has any other show spawned it's own holiday that people take so seriously and at such a wide scale? I seriously doubt it. What makes Seinfeld legendary isn't just how funny it is, but the effects it has had on modern day society.

Well there are some of us on this board who celebrate Unger Day. This is the day Felix Unger's wife threw him out forcing him to move in with his best friend Oscar Madison and thereby creating the Odd Couple.

On the dvd there is an interview with one of the co-writers Dan O'Keefe, and he says Festivus is real. He was telling Jerry and Larry about how his dad invented Festivus. They thought it was funny enough to put in an episode. The only thing Dan said was made up was the metal pole. He swears the rest of it is true.

A few years ago my friends were planning the annual holiday party at our local bar, and we decided to do a Festivus party instead of the regular "holiday" party. We thought we knew all about Festivus based on the Seinfeld episode, but we were wrong. We found websites and books devoted to Festivus; this made up holiday had really taken off! We had no idea Festivus was created in the 60's.

Because I was good with building stuff, I was in charge of making the Festivus Pole. I couldn't believe all the guidlines and rules people had created!
