Here's some interesting info on Ms. Sherwood...............
Biography for Madeleine Sherwood More at IMDbPro » advertisementDate of Birth 13 November 1922, Montreal, Quebec, Canada Birth Name Madeleine Louise Helene Thornton Spouse Robert Sherwood (1940 - ?) (divorced) 1 child Trivia Talented Canadian-born actress, long resident in the U.S.A., who has acted in everything from Tennessee Williams to "The Flying Nun" (1967). Her best remembered role was as the Mother Superior in "The Flying Nun" (1967), and she was born in a town founded, interestingly enough, by an order of nuns. Sherwood was a frequent weekend guest of composer Richard Rodgers and wife Dorothy at their grand Fairfield County, Connecticut estate, Rockmeadow. She has one daughter, two grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She remains a Canadian citizen. She was one of the first women to direct a short film for the American Film Institute. She lost most of her hearing in the 1960s. Was at one time represented by Fred Grey, the first African American to represent a Caucasian woman in the south. She was a great believer in civil rights, working with Martin Luther King, Jr. and being a member of CORE (Congress on Racial Equality). She was arrested during a freedom walk and received six months hard labor. She was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. She was the granddaughter of the Dean of Dentistry at Montreal's McGill University. Acted in eighteen original Broadway productions |

She also played a nun in "The Trouble with Angels", released before The Flying Nun was made.
I always thought she would have been great if an American version of "Keeping Up Appearances" were done as Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced "Boo-kay")

Wow - she was only 45 when the sitcom was on?? I always thought she was much older (though, at 4 yrs old everyone is much older). I'll be 47 soon and can't believe she was younger than me when the show aired!

Same here -- I'm nearly 46 now. I'm glad Madeleine is still with us. Flying Nun had a pretty darn good supporting cast.
I might mention as far as other sitcoms, Florence MacMichael was around 45 when she worked on Mister Ed as Winnie -- she looked older to me at one time, but now I watch and admire her beauty. |
