1. They re-used actors and extras on the show. Myles was on a previous episode as a different character before he became Rose's boy friend. The "boxer", from a previous episode also turned out to be Rose's Consumer Reporter boss later on. Also, Rose dated the "Cheeseman" in one episode, prior to Myles.

2. They wore the same clothes in different epsidoes and shared their clothes/ wadrobe with one another.(earrings,shirts,jackets)

3. Sophia has a sweater of the same design in almost every color.

4. They use the same props. Such as books, magazines in various episdoes.
Kitchen dishes and mugs. The calendar on the back door of the kitchen is the same one from when they started the show.

5. Rose and Sophia almost always had the same pocket book.

I was watching an episode of "Empty Nest" the other day, and Bill Dana, the actor who played Sophia's brother in GG, played her boyfriend! Blech!

The 2nd, 3rd and 5th are a little weird. I don't see anything weird with the 1st and 4th, the 1st especially. TV shows re-use actors all the time, or at least they used to. Mark Lenard played the first ever Romulan in Star Trek before going on to play Sarek.

Re:#1 think this was because Harold Gould, who played Myles, was also a cast member on Susan Harris' previous sitcom, SOAP. I just imagine them staying friendly and Harris offering Gould bit parts when they became available. It could be the same thing with other actors.

Just saw Harold Gould play Harry Weston's father on an episode of Empty Nest. That means he played three different characters for Susan Harris within a period of 3 or 4 years:

Arnie, Rose's first relationship after Charlie.
Miles Webber - her long-term boyfriend.
Stanfield Weston; Harry Weston's father.

I loved Harold Gould. But why have him play three different characters for what had to be the same audience back then? With thousands of other actors to choose from.

Many shows did this. There were probably thirty actors on The Odd Couple that played multiple roles including extras. Richard Stahl, John Byner, Louis Guss, and Phil Leeds, just to name a few.

Fans take this much more seriously than producers/creators of shows. They don't care if they use different actors or contradict themselves in different episodes.

One Day at a Time and I Love Lucy and especially, Three's Company did this quite a lot too. Jeffrey Tambor must have been very well liked on that set.

Cheers had a rule about having one actor playing one role that they only violated once with an actress named Sharon Barr who played Dot Carroll, Norm's accountant and another character named Connie in the "Bidding on the Boys" episode.

The creators don't have the time or money to audition thousands of other actors. It's easier and more efficient to have a stable of reliable actors on hand for minor parts.

Paul Wilson appeared in 55 episodes of Cheers. In his first episode he played "Glen" and in his second episode he played "Tom." Every episode after that he played "Paul."

She dated The Cheeseman while she was with Miles, who was in hiding in some Amish commune, while the Cheeseman remained at large. But I don't know what that has to do with recycling actors.

I recently started watching Murder, She Wrote on Netflix, and they reuse actors a lot for different characters. Many of them have even appeared on Golden Girls.

Most shows (does every one?) reuse actors.

Usually the actors appearances as a different character are spaced out every couple or more years. One exception from GG is the Cuban boxer/consumer reporter.

Also, when you watch the later years you get used to Harold Gould as Miles, and then one GG goes back to the beginning, Harold Gould is Arnie. Because of Miles, I now have a hard time seeing HG as Arnie.
