On Friday I was teaching a class and my eye started to hurt. I figured it was just my contact, so I took it out and thought nothing of it. By midnight it was hurting so much I went to the emergency room. Turns out I have an ulcer on my cornea which may need surgery to remove. (I'll find out tomorrow).

Saturday my father calls me to tell me that my mother, who is a recovering alcoholic, has had a severe relapse, passed out on the kitchen floor, and is going to rehab (for the second time, mind you) next week.

And while I'm sitting in my apartment, minding my own business (no tv, reading, or bright lights because of my eyes) my best friend calls me. She just got back from Iraq and invites me to a show - I can't go because I can't drive. Then she tells me that she has cancer. She's developed lymphoma and is going under the knife on Tuesday.

Does anyone else want to be Emily? I'm willing to trade right now.

I'm very sorry to hear of your struggles. I wish you and your loved ones nothing but good news and happiness. Hang on, all of these crisises may well have positive outcomes.

Liza, all I can say is just go with the flow and put all your trust in God. Everything turns up in the wash sooner or later.

Please give strength to Emily for her eyes, Emily's mother, and Emily's friend. And for me so I don't give up on fufilling my dreams and goals despite the toils that I'm going through.

I really, truly appreciate it.

So far no news is good news. My eye seems to be responding to treatment, and I have a follow up appointment in two days (we're not out of the woods yet). I'm just taking the days off of work and trying to get myself organized. So much has happened in such a short period of time, I can't seem to think straight anymore...
