Chris Elliott Joins How I Met Your Mother

The identity of the titular mother remains a mystery, but How I Met Your Mother fans will get to meet another parent: Lily's previously MIA dad, who'll be played by Get a Life funny guy Chris Elliott.

Elliott joins the gang for the Thanksgiving episode -- set to air on CBS on Nov. 23 -- in which he'll be reunited with his estranged daughter during a holiday dinner at her grandparents' house.

EW.com's Michael Ausiello reports that we'll also see flashbacks to Lily's childhood, which will show some of her dad's shady shenanigans and shed light on why she's not exactly daddy's little girl.

Meanwhile, while rumors persist that upcoming HIMYM guest star Rachel Bilson could turn out to be Ted's mystery baby mama -- she guests in the show's 100th episode, set to air in January 2010 -- Elliott is the latest in a string of guest stars who've played HIMYM family members:

• Wayne Brady has appeared as the gay brother of Neil Patrick Harris' Barney, Frances Conroy played his mother on-screen (and Megan Mullally voiced his mother off-camera), and Bob Barker appeared as Bob Barker, who Barney thinks is his dad

• The Young and the Restless star Eric Braeden guest-starred as Robin Scherbatsky, Sr., father of Cobie Smulders' Robin

• Suzie Plakson (Robert's ex-wife on Everybody Loves Raymond) and Coach star Bill Fagerbakke played Judy and Marvin Eriksen, parents of Jason Segel's Marshall
