I've just learned from a source at Comedy Central that Kröd Mändoon and The Flaming Sword of Fire will not return be returning for a second season.

Now, I'm sure this wasn't anyone's favorite show, and there won't be too many online petitions for its return. But I was fond of it, and was hoping it would get a chance to grow a bit more.

For one thing, a fantasy comedy was a departure for Comedy Central's schedule. It was a little island of oddity amongst the more modern-looking programming, a pleasant change of pace. I also enjoyed the crew of supporting characters. Mändoon himself was kind of the standard altruistic oaf, but there was plenty of room for development, especially learning the others.

Mändoon was broad enough to be able to fit accommodate Kevin Hart, a stand-up comedian from Def Comedy Jam and Superhero Movie, Little Britain's Matt Lucas, and Run, Fatboy, Run's India de Beaufort.

Although Lucas probably wouldn't have served as a long term nemesis with so many other projects to tend to, it would have been interesting to see a new enemy every season tailored to a new quest, someone who could step in for a six-episode arc.

Perhaps Anthony Head could have been pried away from Merlin (if it continued past its own first season), or someone like Dana Carvey, who hasn't had much luck lately but would be wonderful in something like this.

For now, you can still see clips and deleted scenes on the Comedy Central Web site.

I enjoyed the six episodes that aired but never expected to see more.

I'll say this was a different and clever show but I just knew that it wasn't going to be a hit.

...that Comedy Central have shown over the years {Robert Smigel's "TV FUNHOUSE", for one}. They do encourage new ideas, but they also have a "let's see if this sticks to the wall, and gauge how well it holds up" mentality. If a new series does well, they might order anywhere from one to three seasons' worth [13-39 episodes], as in the case of "VIVA VARIETY", "RENO 911!", "CHAPPELLE'S SHOW", "THE SARAH SILVERMAN PROGRAM", "ATOM TV", and the soon-to-be renewed "JEFF DUNHAM SHOW". In "KROD MANDOON"'s case, it was just "too offbeat" to warrant another six or more episodes [translation: not enough viewer support].
