Does anyone else have thermostat wars at work? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

At my work, there are a few teachers who insist on having the windows in the staff lounge open all the time, even in the dead of winter when it's freezing cold out. Some of us will close it when we're in there, but then one of these women will come in and open it right up without even bothering to ask those of us who were in there first if we want it open or not. This drives me and several others who work there absolutely nuts!

I'm seriously considering eating lunch at my desk in the classroom from now on even though we're not supposed to because it's too cold for me in the staff lounge. I do dress appropriately for the cold weather. These women will often wear several layers, but instead of taking off a layer or not wearing so much in the first place, they expect the rest of us to freeze. It's not even that hot in the building.

I know, in this economy I should be grateful I still have a job

I just wish a few certain co-workers were a little less annoying...

I had a roomate at Bible College who liked to have the window open at night in our dorm room. I preferred it closed. So I always made sure I went to bed later than he did. He would open the window and go to bed. A little while later I would close the window and I would go to bed. Aren't I the clever one!!

I work in a factory, and instead of thermostat wars, we have "window wars", lol.

Some people in there are always hot; I swear they'll throw open those windows in the dead of winter, and wear shorts to boot! Others are always cold, and seem to thrive on sweating.

Me? I try to stay lukewarm/cool.

Doesn't work in my case though. They just open it when they come in and if I try to close it a few minutes later, they give me a hard time about it even though I was in there before they were.

No, but there's a thermostat war in my home. My husband likes it like Alaska, and I like it like Spring in New England. He'd open the bedroom window in the winter if I'd let him, lol.

I know this is not the point of your original post, but why are you not supposed to eat lunch at your desk? I do it every day because the staff lounge is too stressful for me (way too much gossip, badmouthing, and all-around negativity.)

We brought a thermometer in the room and it was actually 42 degrees. Finally we got them to come down and check, and apparently the temperature register in my room was broken so they were getting a misreading at their office. Why they cannot trust me to adjust my own thermostat is beyond me.

And teachers who are rude and just walk in and do whatever they want...I can certainly relate to that. I have a big classroom with two walls of windows and I love the natural light. Unless it is a cloudy day, I prefer to leave the harsh overhead lights off and enjoy the natural light. There is this one reading teacher who walks in my room everyday and flips on the lights and announces, "You need some light in here." It is NOT dark in my room. I would never make the kids work in the dark. The kids just laugh at her now and after she finishes her 15 minutes with her intervention student and leaves, one of the kids will go turn the light back off.

Our principal just doesn't like us eating at our desks for some reason. She says it's a classroom and there shouldn't be food eaten in there, which makes absolutely no sense because the kids can have snack time in the room.

I totally agree about the backstabbing, gossip, cattiness, and negativity. Some of my co-workers act like that too. There are only a couple of people I really consider friends.

Our heating system is controlled by the custodians. It doesn't even get all that warm. The main lobby and first floor hallways are often chilly in the cold weather.

That reading teacher at your school sounds awfully rude I have to go into a couple of different classrooms to work with students and I would never intrude on the classroom teacher like that. They certainly wouldn't let me get away with it

That's good!!! I like that idea!

My husband and I used to have issues with this. He worked Monday-Friday and I worked weekends with Wednesday and Thursday off. We would sleep with the ceiling fan on at night and, being that I would freeze, I would have about 5 blankets on me. Well, in the morning, he would leave to go to work and turn off the fan. So then a few hours later, I would wake up in a sweat! I had to tell him several times that even if he leaves the house I'm still there, so I'll turn off the fan!

Currently our office doesn't have a way for us to adjust the air, but I keep a blanket and a fan at my desk. It's weird because every morning when I come into work, I have to turn on the fan. Even in winter. I'm usually overheated from walking to work in a heavy coat. However, it doesn't take that long to cool down, but I still leave the fan on all day. So far I haven't had too many issues with it bothering anyone.

A LOOOOONNNGGG time ago when I worked at Blockbuster Video, I came into work the morning shift. I think it was around 9. We wore those classic navy blue blockbuster polos with khaki pants as our uniform. The store manager was working and he must have been overheated or something because he turned on the fan full blast all day. It was probably in the 80's outside (it was Texas so it could have been any month of the year!

) and it was so cold in the store that every window was fogged up. As soon as he left and the night manager came in I begged him to PLEASE turn off the air conditioner!

Kind of like when Elaine went to visit Jerry's parents on Seinfeld and begged them to turn ON the A/C, but in reverse!

I thought I was the only one who hated eating in the break room! I will do anything to avoid having to eat in there. We can't eat at our desks either. Well, we aren't supposed to, but I do eat breakfast and snacks there, if they are ready made. But we definitely can't eat our lunch at our desk. The reason being is because of the "sensitive equipment" such as computers, and computer mice.

YES!!! They keep the AC on year round, and they REALLY crank it up. That's one thing I won't miss about the center closing down!
