Default An Arrested Devlopment Movie Scrpt IS in the works

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Narrator: Now the story of a wealthy family who lost everything ... and just may get some of it back.

"Arrested Development" creator Mitchell Hurwitz and his co-executive producer James Vallely are working on a screenplay for the long-debated feature version of their short-lived Fox series. Even as they prep a new Fox comedy series with "Arrested" star Will Arnett, the writers are spinning more bizarre encounters for the eccentric, spoiled Bluth clan for possible feature production in the spring.

Hurwitz would also direct the Fox Searchlight feature.

Hurwitz had said that he wouldn't start writing a film unless all the main actors, including Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, David Cross, Arnett, Alia Shawkat, Portia de Rossi and Jeffrey Tambor, were committed. Scheduling might be difficult, however, as several -- Bateman, Cera and Arnett -- have seen their careers bloom since the series began its three-season run in 2003.

Hurwitz and Vallely won Emmys for their writing on "Arrested Development." They work together on the animated Fox comedy "Sit Down, Shut Up."

Like many of you, I've been of the mind that the much discussed "Arrested Development" movie was never going to happen, particularly given recent comments from Jason Bateman himself. But apparently, one should never say never, particularly where never-nudes are concerned.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that the "Arrested Development" film is a go, with series mastermind Mitch Hurwitz and co-executive producer James Vallely working on the screenplay as we speak. The film will be produced by Imagine and Fox Searchlight, with Hurwitz himself set to direct.

According to THR's report, the "Arrested Development" movie never quite got off the ground because Hurwitz was waiting for the show's entire acting roster to commit before he'd write the screenplay. Many rumors pinned the blame on Michael Cera for allegedly holding up the process, but it now appears that the actor -- and the rest of the Bluth clan -- are on board.

That's as best as I can see it, at least. Honestly, I'm having a hard time getting excited about this bit of "Arrested Development" news, given how many false starts the project has had already. Seriously, development on the movie almost feels more problematic than the show's own woes at Fox during the twilight of its run. Even with the THR revelations, I'm not convinced the the movie is really all that much closer to a reality.

Beyond that, I was actually very satisfied with the creative conclusion of the show. Every character has a closed, full circle resolution fitting of a series finale, and as a result, I'm not particularly desperate for more adventures with the Bluth clan. That's why I have my DVDs -- I can relive the old days over and over as often as I want, and the jokes will never get old.

As Larry David described it during last night's "Curb Your Enthusiasm," reunion projects are very rarely a good idea -- and while I have total faith in Hurwitz's ability to craft a hilarious new "Arrested Development" story, I'm not exactly sure that I need to see it at this point.
