This thread is dedicated to the best advice Mom gave you. When I told my stepmother that my Darryl character was based on Michael Jackson's Darryl character from "Bad(full 16 minute version), she told me, "You know, if I were Michael, I would have told you to get your own character."

(this was months before Michael died). I decided to heed her advice. I dropped the Darryl character and made my background character Dave a lead character. Dave is a perfect candidate for being a lead character. He's gay in a homophobic private high school for boys, used to be a cocaine addict,(beat the addiction in two weeks) and was unfairly abused constantly by one of his classmates. That's prime fodder for a lead character!

Well, when my husband and I first met, we would talk on the phone late at night. One night I said something about my dad, who had died about 6 months earlier. His response really ticked me off. I admit that I had been bringing up my dad a lot, and it probably annoyed him. So I told my mom I wasn't going to have anything more to do with him. I had told her about the major dysfunctional family that he had/has and about his awful childhood and she told me to just blow off what he said. If I had gone with my instincts, we might not be together today. BTW, he did apologize many times after wards!

one great thing she has said to me is to not worry about things. this is as far as fears go. if you face them, and you are still afraid, don't hurt yourself over something. live your life.

Ignore what other people say. If you retaliate (spelling?), you're just giving them what they want. Ignore them and they'll pick on somebody else.

Two things:

If anybody ever hits you hit them back

and

If anybody ever calls you a N******, kick their ass!!!!

I have had to take both those two pieces of advice a few times, but such is life.
