EDIT: I originally posted a link to the results page of a forum search for the sirname Cuylenborg. The link doesn't appear to work now. Keying in the names of the victims should get some hits though. This case has been discussed here a few times in the past.

One thing that struck me about those letters is the saying "Halleluyah Bloody Jesus". What an odd phrase. I consider that case one of the freakiest ones UM ever did. What creeps me out is the scene where the suspect is talking to the couple on the ferry and you can see his reflection on the window, but his actual face is never shown..

Yeah, that was a memorable moment. I always figured this would be an interesting case to read the police file on. An investigator mentioned on the segment that they believed the killer had been in the prison system based on something that was done to Jay.

This case was also covered in the book "Murderers Among Us". Strangely, the book didn't mention the greeting cards. An odd omission. I wonder if they were really written by the killer. What was shown on UM (there was probably more) just seemed pretty generic.

Yes, I remember him saying that, but didn't say exactly what was done to Jay. Can anyone make any guesses?

There was another thread where this question came up and some theories were proposed. I can't recall any off the top of my head right now. I always figured it had to do with torture or maybe even sexual abuse.

I doubt these details were ever released to the public. I think the detective on the segment even said that he couldn't elaborate any further.

I have no guess myself on what the killer might have done to Jay, but I have no doubt that the interviewee had a good reason for not being specific on the matter. I suspect that he wanted to raise the possibility of a suspect slipping up by indicating a knowledge of them, at which point detectives working on the case would begin to wonder how that person knew about those undisclosed details unless he was involved in the crime.

I have no idea what could have happened to Jay that would be indicitive of a prison style murder. And you'd think that I would have heard something since over the years, my dad did time, my cousin is still in and has been in prison in at least two states, and one of our family friends is waiting to get out any day now after serving nearly 10 years.

Anyone know if the 'Hallelujah Bloody Jesus' phrase is more prominent in one region of the world than another? Or maybe used by one generation more than another, like the valley girl 'language' of the 80s?

Wasn't the phrase 'piss off' more of a british term until the internet rolled around and everyone around the globe started communicating every day?

The terms, 'well I'll swear' and 'bless his heart' are fairly specific to the american south.

Anyway, HBJ is such an odd phrase, I wondered if it was just a favorite of the letter writer or if it could be connected to a certain group of people who regularly used that term.
