TV Full TV Teaser for Stephen King's "Haven"

TV: Dead Zone Team Reunites for Stephen King's Haven!
Tuesday, September 29, 2009
By: MrDisgusting

Stephen King is taking another stab at the smallscreen, signing on to turn his novella "The Colorado Kid" into an hour-long series for indie studio E1 Entertainment ("Hung").

Titled Haven, the project centers on a spooky town in Maine where cursed folk live normal lives in exile. When those curses start returning, FBI agent Audrey Parker is brought in to keep those supernatural forces at bay -- while trying to unravel the mysteries of Haven.

The team who turned King's "The Dead Zone" into a series for USA Network are at it again for "Haven": Scott Shepherd will serve as showrunner and exec produce with Lloyd Segan and Shawn Piller. Shepherd, Segan and Piller were all exec producers on "The Dead Zone," which ran for six seasons and went off the air in 2008.

Two more "Dead Zone" alums, Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn, are writing the pilot and will also serve as exec producers. E1's John Morayniss and Noreen Halpern are exec producers as well.

E1 has already committed to producing 13 episodes of "Haven" and is in advanced talks with several European broadcast partners to sign on and help finance the show.

E1 plans to bring the international co-production to next month's Mipcom confab. After securing an international partner, the company will turn its attention to finding U.S. and Canadian broadcasters. E1 has aggressively pursued international co-productions, setting up series such as "Copper" for ABC and "Canwest" and "The Bridge" for CBS and CTV.

Morayniss said production on "Haven" will commence some time in the next six months, after partners are secured and casting is finalized.

"The Colorado Kid" was first published in 2005. Adaptation was initially developed for ABC for the 2008-09 TV season.

King has a long history of seeing his works translated for television -- most recently, the Syfy longform "Children of the Corn," which was telecast this past weekend.

King was also behind ABC's 2003-04 TV series "Stephen King's Kingdom Hospital," which was actually based on a Danish miniseries. Other recent King adaptations include ABC's telepic "Stephen King's Desperation" and TNT's mini "Stephen King's Salem's Lot."

Universal Co-Financing Stephen King's Haven
Source: Variety
October 6, 2009

A few weeks back, we reported that E1 Entertainment were developing a TV series with Stephen King called Haven adapted from his original novella The Colorado Kid.

Now, Variety reports that Universal Networks Intl., the newly rebranded global channels unit of NBC Universal, has signed on to co-finance the drama.

Indie studio E1 Entertainment is currently developing 13 episodes of Haven to produce. While Universal has acquired exclusive pay TV rights across the globe except for the U.S., Canada and Scandinavia, where distribution is still being sought.

No word yet on when production will ramp up, but the pilot is being written by Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn, whom also served as exec producers on USA's The Dead Zone series.

More when we hear it!

Stephen King's Colorado Kid Rides to SyFy
Source: Variety
November 30, 2009

The producers of the hit television series The Dead Zone are turning to another Stephen King tale.

Showrunner Scott Shepherd and executive producers Lloyd Segan and Shawn Piller are overseeing Haven for SyFy. It's an adaptation of King's novella "The Colorado Kid" and is set in the Maine town of Haven where an FBI agent is investigating supernatural forces plaguing those living in exile.

Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn wrote the pilot.

"The Colorado Kid" was first published in 2005 and was King's crack at hard-boiled noir.

Three Drawn into SyFy's "Haven"
Source: Shock Till You Drop
March 28, 2010

Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant ("Dollhouse") and Eric Balfour (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) have been cast in Syfy's new series "Haven", based on the novella "The Colorado Kid" from author Stephen King.

The series kicks off this summer following FBI agent Audrey Parker (Rose), who arrives in the small town of Haven, Maine on a routine case...only to discover that this curious enclave has served as a longtime refuge for people who are afflicted with a remarkable range of supernatural abilities.

Bryant will play Nathan Wuornos, the wry local cop who soon becomes Audrey's partner. Bristling under the thumb of his father, the Chief of Police, Nathan has a quiet, controlled demeanor that often clashes with Audrey's feisty one: a dichotomy that also makes them perfect complements. As events in the town begin to unfold at a surprising pace, Nathan's usual controlled sense of calm is put to the test.

Also among the citizens of this eccentric town is Duke Crocker (Balfour), a charming yet mysterious jack-of-all-trades. Though Duke outwardly appears to be a free spirit who lives an unobtrusive life on his boat, it becomes apparent that his mellow demeanor may conceal a much darker agenda.

Shooting is taking place in Halifax, Nova Scotia this spring.

Emily Rose Gives a Sneak Peak Into Syfy's "Haven"
Posted Apr 21st 2010
by Bryan Reesman

Stephen King stories practically never get turned into weekly television shows. Adaptations have almost always been done as theatrical or television movies or mini-series, and only one has gone the weekly series route:

"The Dead Zone". At least that lasted a good six seasons.

The eight-episode "Nightmares and Dreamscapes", which was based on eight short stories, sort of counts, while the planned adaptation of the epic book "Under The Dome" might get a 10- to 12-episode cable run.

Neither of those, however, had or has long-term potential.

Set to begin shooting in April and hit the airwaves in July, Syfy's "Haven", inspired by the King novella The Colorado Kid, aspires to become only the second King adaptation in regular TV series form.

Perhaps it will generate a paradigm shift?

According to star Emily Rose, who spoke to AOL at last week's Syfy Channel Upfront, there are 13 episodes of "Haven" planned for season one, and she hoped it might extend beyond that.

She also stressed that the series will not be a literal translation of King's tale, which she said had a frustrating lack of resolution.

"I think that certain characters and the themes of that story are going to be embedded in this," Rose explained. "We do take the characters from that story and place them in our own world. If people are expecting this to be The Colorado Kid, it's not that."

On "Haven", Rose will play FBI agent Audrey Parker (a far cry from the newspaper staffers in the original story) who grew up as an orphan in the state of Ohio.

"She has this inner mystery that's driven her whole life," said Rose.

"'Who is my family? Where do I come from? What the hell am I doing here?' I think people who don't have a family or don't have that home base to go to look for structure or look for family, or just get really angry.

She chooses to look for that structure and for that family. They refer to the FBI as the 'the family' a lot in the bureau. You don't tell what's going on in the family.
"

In the Syfy version, Parker becomes a very successful FBI agent, and she gets called to tackle a murder case in Haven, Maine, which has residents with supernatural powers.

After her arrival, strange things begin happening, "and all of a sudden she feels like this town of Haven is calling out to her," explained Rose.

"She gets these mysterious messages like 'Welcome home, Audrey,' and some strange things that she ends up seeing lead her to believe that this place could have some roots for her.

Once the other mystery is solved, she personally goes to seek out her own mystery and to resolve her own case. She ends up sticking around Haven for a lot longer than she originally thought, and the town has a lot of mysterious things going on for her that she ends up getting pulled in by.
"

Rose stated that while she has once before played a tough-as-nails exterior but softer-on-the-inside type character like Parker, it was for a shorter story arc. With "Haven" she can develop things further.

"With some of the roles I've had, you can only experience an arc in such a short way, and this is a season I get to look forward to in building this character," she said, adding that this is the first time she has gotten to play a detective, which she has wanted to do for a long time.

"I've gotten to be the action girl before, but I've never played an orphan before. I think people could overlook that in Audrey if they're not careful, and I don't want that to be the case," she continued.

"I think the fact that she doesn't have a place to go home to for Christmas, that she doesn't have somebody to call at the end of a hard work week, is a big deal, and I think it's important for me to remind myself of that.

I have a great family, so I take that for granted. But Audrey doesn't, so I think that's very different, that kind of hollowness, no home base. That's a big deal for her.
"

"Heroes" Director Boards Syfy's "Haven"
Posted Apr 26th 2010
by Mike Moody

Adam Kane, who directed episodes of "Heroes" and "The Mentalist", is diving back into genre TV with Stephen King's "Haven".

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the director has singed to helm the pilot for Syfy's upcoming supernatural series, based on King's novella, The Colorado Kid.

The project, which centers on an FBI agent investigating a murder in a creepy town in Maine, has snagged Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant, Eric Balfour and Richard Donat for key roles.

Rose, who chatted with us about the show last week, plays the agent who, she said, is also trying to solve a personal mystery that's "driven her whole life."

"Haven" has some strong ties to the "The Dead Zone", the last TV show adapted from King's work. Show producers Shawn Piller, Lloyd Segan and Scott Shepherd are all "Dead Zone" vets who guided that series through six respectable seasons on USA.

Time will tell if "Haven", which is also being pitched to networks abroad, will have a similar shelf life.

The series is set to premiere later this year.
