Does anyone know if Recess still has new eisodes or not?

Brett, I posted this question to one of the newsgroups, and several people told me that there ARE 13 new episodes of "Recess" in production, but ABC ordered them late, so they won't be ready until possibly February.

Since the show has reached 65 episodes, ABC was planning to stop production, but it has become so successful that they're going supposedly to continue with new episodes. I do know that there's a new Christmas movie coming direct-to-video in November, which has clips from past episodes interspersed with new wraparound material.

If these new episodes do get made, I wonder if they'll take place after the events from last spring's movie, where the kids finished fourth grade and a new king of the playground was crowned.

"Recess" has become one of my favorites, BTW. Very cleverly written.

According to the article at http://www.gazette.com/weekly/column...tein/806.html, new episodes of "Recess" won't hit the air until 2002. ABC was apparently going to let the show go into reruns after 65 episodes (as is standard), until the show became the highest rated show on their Saturday morning schedule. The same thing happened to "Rugrats", which resumed production because the reruns were getting such good ratings.

I don't think a Disney cartoon has gone past 65 episodes since Gargoyles. Look at all the shows that Disney and ABC let die after one season's worth of episodes:

Buzz Lightyear of Star Command (65) episodes
Sabrina the Animated Series (65)
Hercules (65)
101 Dalmations (65)
The Mighty Ducks (26 - 39?)
Goof Troop (65)
Tale Spin (65)
Chip & Dale's Rescue Rangers (65)
Quack Pack (39)

I think Pepper Ann has more than 65 episodes and it is done by Disney. I'm not very sure though...

Check out epguides.com -- they have "Pepper Ann" at around 65 shows. There are even a few that didn't air on ABC (it was pulled from the schedule midseason last year) or syndication/UPN, so they will get their first showings on Toon Disney and the Disney Channel.

65 episodes is considered the ideal number for a healthy syndication package for cartoons, the same way 100 episodes is considered the minimum for prime time series. This allows a show to run five days a week for 13 weeks without showing the same episode twice. Any more than this is considered redundant, because it is felt that kids will tire of a cartoon after a couple of years of reruns, whether there are 65 episodes or 165. It's more economical to produce less. Too bad -- I wouldn't mind seeing some new "Doug" or "Pepper Ann" episodes.

Pepper Ann probably just had the 65 episodes divided up by UPN and ABC, like Recess was. I think ABC planned on both P.A. and Recess jumping over to Toon Disney together before Recess became popular on Saturday mornings.

Winnie the Pooh probably hit the 65 mark, too. It left ABC for a year or two, then came back in repeats because it started getting more popular on the Disney Channel.
