I think this is the first cartoon/crossword puzzle crossover ever," laughs Al Jean. Very Special Episode of The Simpsons .

"It's still done by the people who do the puzzles," Jean promises. "All we wanted was to have this message from Homer to Lisa in the puzzle, which is there. Then they wrote a puzzle around that. What they said was that they weren't going to promote it as a The Simpsons thing, but they'd do it."
In addition to working on the puzzle, Reagle and Shortz pop up for vocal cameos, joining the ranks of unexpected and oddball The Simpsons guest voices.

I could swear that the opening segment with Bart and Lisa at the lemon aide stand had been shown before.
