Ready to roll once again with the friendly, fun-loving cabbies of the Emmy Award-winning hit sitcom Taxi? Well then buckle up for hilarity because the gang of the Sunshine Cab Company are out to exceed the limits of comedy in this 4th season set! First, Jim (Christopher Lloyd) might not be firing on all cylinders, but his amazing psychic abilities are...then Elaine (Marilu Henner) blows a gasket when she catches Louie (Danny DeVito) spying on her in the garage bathroom...Tony (Tony Danza) meanwhile appears back on the track to boxing fame. Bobby (Jeff Conaway) hits town with some big career news, Alex has outrageous run-ins with both his estranged father and his ex-wife. Meanwhile Latka (Andy Kaufmann) may actually marry Simka (Carol Kane) -- if his suave alter ego Vic Ferrari doesn’t accidentally get in the way. It is 24 episodes of non-stop high-octane hilarity in this three disc set.

Folks, I do believe we have our answers regarding "Vienna Waits". Why am I not surprised?

My copy of the set arrived today. Overall I am just really happy - most of my favorite episodes are from seasons 4 and 5, so I'm ecstatic to have 'em all. I thought the video quality of these DVDs seems better than prior seasons, though I don't know why that'd be. Nice to see clean prints of those great facial shots. Jesus Iggy needed a shave!
As for the missing music: I was slightly disappointed that they cut the Billy Joel song out. I was 10 when this episode came out, and my family watched the show each week faithfully. I was also a Billy Joel fan, but at that young age I only knew his current stuff. So I'd never really listened to Vienna, nor connected it to Taxi, until my wife fell in love with the song a few years ago. So without much sentimental attachment to the song in the episode, cutting the scene with that yokel trashing the song on the plane didn't bother me...at all. I had watched it on Youtube recently, for the first time in 20+ years, and thought it was cheesy. For me it's losing the Billy joel version between scenes that's the real loss. Even still, the episode holds up well. They were pretty clever to use national anthems instead of incidental music. It's not a perfect situation, but if the choice is between the brilliant comedy Taxi on DVD with a couple of changes to background music vs. not having the DVDs at all, I know my vote. |
