"Archie" Making his Way from the Comics to the Big Screen! - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Archie Comics Publications has signed with CAA. The agency will seek to create branded entertainment opportunities in film and TV in much the way that it has for toymaker Mattel.
The 70-year-old Archie Comics owns such brands as Archie & Friends, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats, Cosmo the Merry Martian, Super Duck and Dotty and Ditto.

The Archie Comics pact comes as Hollywood is quickly gobbling up established branded properties, as evidenced by Disney's pending acquisition of Marvel Entertainment and Warner Bros.' recent exec overhaul of DC Comics.

Talent agencies have also been catalysts in matching branded properties with studios. CAA helped set up Mattel's "Major Matt Mason" property as a starring vehicle for Tom Hanks. WME has done strong business for its client Hasbro, which just set an adaptation of its board game "Battleship" for a July 2011 release with Peter Berg directing (Daily Variety, Sept. 18).

True, but somethings don't translate to film. Archie being one of them.

Never did understand the appeal of Archie comics outside of being a chick comic.

The big problem with the long lived Filmation translation was that the girls's rivaly was eliminated;likewise Reg was less of a snide-ster [even the basically mediocre Hanna-Barbera Josie and the Pussycats had their token villians, the cat Sebastian, and skunk gal Alexandra, keep their villiany but not their witchcraft [but that's damning with faint priase.]

...efforts to adapt a new live-action version of "Archie" with a grain of salt. They've tried before: an unsold and unaired 1963 sitcom pilot; a 1977 "variety hour" format for ABC that was tried twice, with "no sale"; and that god-awful 1990 NBC TV movie "...To Riverdale and Back", which imagined the gang as young adults! The only sure thing Archie ever had was the original radio show {"THE ADVENTURES OF ARCHIE ANDREWS"} in the '40s and early '50s, and the Saturday morning cartoon shows in the '60s and '70s...which was a slight adaptation of the original radio show (as CBS executive Fred Silverman envisioned it- right down to Veronica's southern accent, so you could tell her and Betty apart on radio- also with no rivalry between them). Frankly, I'd be surprised if something DID happen from all this!
