Grandparents Day

Today is Grandparents Day. Does anyone do anything for their grandparents on this day? This day started in the late 1970's and I was never too sure how big it became. I don't remember doing anything for mine but that goes back probably 15 to 20 years.

Growing up every Sunday my family would go to my grandparents house on my father's side of the family for dinner.

On my mother's side of the family I remember going to my Grandmom's house and playing with toy cars with my cousins.

Wish I could go back to those days - things just seemed simpler.

If anyone out there is a grandparent or does anything with their own grandparents today I hope you have a wonderful day.

Are your grandparents still living?

Thank you for posting this, because I had forgotten about it being grandparents day. My grandad (my only living grandparent) is 98 and in an assisted living home. I saw him in July when I went home for my mom's wedding and I was very happy (and honestly relieved) that he seemed to remember me; especially since it had been a few years since I'd been back). He will be 99 on November 9th and we are hoping that he makes it to 100 and beyond.

I miss being able to go visit my grandparents on my dad's side. They lived about a hour away and visiting them for a week or a weekend was something I really looked foreword to. My grandad died in 1979 but I continued to visit my grandmother as much as I could. When I went to college she was thrilled that I picked a school that was only about 30 minutes away. I saw her quite a bit during school-even more than I saw my brother and parents!

When I got my own apartment it turned out to be closer to my grandparents on my mom's side rather than to my mom's house so often after work I would go over to their house and stay for several hours. Basically all we did was watch TV and talk but I still remember having a great time. When I was in elementary school (and even into junior high and high school), my grandmother would pick me up from school and take me to her house. I loved that and I always hated when my mom would get off work and have to come to my grandmother's house to take me home!

I think this holiday is very underrated and I wish they would promote it more, like they do Mother's Day and Father's Day. Seems kind of unfair, don't you think? However, I always gave my granparents gifts on those days, so I don't feel too terribly bad about forgetting their personal holiday. One year I actually remembered and they didn't understand why I was giving them cards and gifts! They didn't know Grandparent's Day existed!!!

Thanks for the reminder. Sadly, I am always forgetting about this day. My grandad is 98 and in an assisted living home right now. I was going to send a card, but honestly, I don't think he would know that it was from me. He is the only grandparent I have, and I was fortunate enough to visit him back in July when I was home for my mom's wedding. I was very happy (and honestly relieved) that he seemed to recognize me. That is enough comfort to me, just knowing that he remembers me. He's doing well, and he'll be 99 on November 9th. I'm praying that he makes it to at least 100.

I used to spend a lot of times with my grandparents on both parents side. My dad's parents lived in East Texas and although my grandfather died back in 1979, I still remember going to visit them. Those were the best kind of vacations for me as a kid. After he died, I continued to visit my grandmother as often as possible and I called her once a week. I was devestated when she died in 2000, and I still regret not going to the funeral. It was purely a financial thing, because otherwise I would have been there.

My granddad is the only one living on my mom's side. My grandmother died in March of 1996, three months before my wedding.

At my wedding, I had three pink candles that my mom lit as the service started in memory of my dad, my granddad and my grandma. I really miss them and I miss the fun times I shared with my grandad who's still alive. It seems like I've already lost part of him, but I'm thankful he's still with us.

I don't have any grandparent's that are living

I knew three of my grandparents (my mother's father died before I was born) - and I still miss them all. They would come to Grandparents' Day at school, etc. They are all gone now but I still miss them every day. My parents are now wonderful grandparents to my two nephews, so that takes a sting off a bit.
