Default When did Van give up football ?
In the earlier seasons, he played football and was going to play in college. In the later seasons, he started selling real estate.

What happened ?

Yup. In season four the episode Diamond Jim Brady he finds out his spine is narrowing. He starts to sell real estate after asking Reba for the job in the second to last episode of season four Help Wanted.
