Exclamation "20/20" Anchor John Stossel Jumps to Fox

NEW YORK — ABC anchor John Stossel, a libertarian whose work earned him fiercely loyal fans at the same time he caused headaches for the network, is jumping to Fox.

He's trading a much bigger platform for the promise of more time on the air. Stossel will have a weekly show on the Fox Business Network, exploring libertarianism and consumer issues, and make frequent appearances on Fox News Channel, the network said on Thursday.

Stossel's regular "Give Me a Break" segments prodded at groupthink, and he wrote best-selling books under that name and "Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity." Yet activists have called for his firing, and the network compelled him to apologize for a 2000 report questioning the safety of organic produce.

A year later, Stossel had to film new interviews after parents objected to their children being interviewed for a show on what they were taught about the environment. Stossel said the parents were "brainwashed" by his environmental critics.

"I'm grateful to ABC for allowing me to do stories that challenged conventional wisdom, and occasionally enraged many of its viewers," Stossel said in a blog posting. "But it's been said that everyone should change jobs every seven years. I've been at ABC for 28 years."

He said he wanted to explore the concepts of liberty and limited government. "Fox offers me more airtime and a new challenge," he said.

Stossel had complained on his blog earlier this summer when a story he did on Canadian health care was temporarily shelved for Michael Jackson coverage on the week of the pop star's death. The story ran later.

Stossel also carved out a specialty in family issues. Two of his ABC specials, "Teens: What Makes Them Tick" and "Love, Lust and Marriage" finished in Nielsen Media Research's top 10 in the weeks they were aired in the late 1990s.

Roger Ailes, Fox News chairman and CEO, said Stossel "has done meaningful and important work throughout his career. His thoughtful and charismatic style has carved a unique niche in the world of television."

Before he became an anchor on "20/20," Stossel was a consumer reporter on ABC's "Good Morning America" and on CBS' New York affiliate.

Stossel follows other former ABC journalists Brit Hume and Chris Wallace in moving to Fox.

ABC said in a statement that "we will miss him."

STOSSEL: WHY I LEFT ABC FOR FOX
Friday, Sept. 18, 2009

John Stossel has acknowledged that he made the jump from ABC to Fox Business Network and Fox News Channel primarily because he felt muzzled by ABC News producers.

In a commentary posted on the Townhall.com website, Stossel wrote that while he was "usually" able to air features reflecting his libertarian viewpoint, "it was frustrating. My vision and that of my producers were often not in harmony. Too many stories I thought were important ... were not aired."

Conspicuously he does not indicate whether Fox, which often reflects the views of the religious right, will allow him to produce programs that champion the libertarian positions on drugs, prostitution, gambling, pornography and abortion.

I hope FNC gives John a show of his own.

When John Stossel came to ABC News from New York's WCBS-TV in 1981, he thought he'd pick up where he left off, and continue his patented, hard-hitting "consumer news reporting", little realizing that ABC had no intention of offending their major advertisers when it came to reporting on "consumer fraud", et. al. After he discovered this, he carried on (one of his first assignments at the network was to interview Joan Collins after she joined the cast of "DYNASTY"), and, over the years, became an increasingly cynical man- with an attitude to match. And his reports certainly reflected that.

The last straw came when he produced his report on Canadian health care, and Michael Jackson had to die just at the moment it was about to appear. I'd like to believe the dialogue between him and ABC News went this way:

STOSSEL: Look, I'm not going to...
ABC NEWS: We're not going to put up with you any more! Michael Jackson's death is news, and you're not.
STOSSEL: But health care-
ABC NEWS: SCREW "health care"! We need ratings to counterbalance the entertainment division's lousy schedule this summer!!!
STOSSEL: I just won't stand for this.....
ABC NEWS: We can't stand YOU!! In fact, John, we're not even going to renew your contract. We're going to give YOU a break. Why don't you go to Fox News Channel- where you belong- and STAY there???

And he did- only it was Fox Business Channel, where he'll soon have his own weekly hour where he can do whatever he wants....
