An Oldies Station: Wouldn't this be cool? - Sitcoms Online Message Boards

Hey, I was just thinking of this quite sometime ago.

Wouldn't it be cool if somebody came up with a new type of television station that will air all the old shows like "I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy, Leave It To Beaver, Andy Griffith, Brady Bunch," as well as "The Lucy/Desi Comedy Hour" series".

This oldies station could be based on the radio version of the oldies station except that airs old songs. The one on tv can all air the shows in their original unedited form and with fewer commercials to.

Also it could be like this for I Love Lucy or The Lucy Show.

3:00PM: I Love Lucy
3:30PM: I Love Lucy
4:00PM: The Lucy Show
4:30PM: The Lucy Show
5:00PM: Here's Lucy
5:00PM: Here's Lucy
6:00PM: The Brady Bunch
6:30PM: The Brady Bunch
7:00PM: The Andy Griffith Show
7:00PM: The Andy Griffith Show
8:00PM: Leave It To Beaver
8:00PM: Leave It To Beaver

And so on. If your wondering about the Lucy/Desi Comedy House they could air that as part of the I Love Lucy Package. Say for instence after they air all of the half hour I Love Lucy episodes the list could look like this.

3-4PM: I Love Lucy/The Lucy/Desi Comedy Hour
4-5PM: The Lucy Show
5-6PM: Here's Lucy
6-7PM: The Brady Bunch

They'll have other shows and movies on to during the day but I was starting from the 3PM time slot just give an idea. And on the weekends in the mornings they could repeats of the previous weeks episodes of I Love Lucy and Here's Lucy as well as old movies. This list is for M-F.

I would love to see this! I wish that Retro TV that I get would develop into at least a half day station instead of just a few hours! What would be really cool is if they showed old commercials in between instead of new ones!

I don't really think it's that people don't care about the old shows, since the DVD sets seem to be big hits. It's the NETWORKS that don't care and think that the world revolves around reality shows and garbage like that!

There is already a network like this for classic movies(TCM) and I would love to see something similar for classic TV shows.

Actually there are more then enough people who care about these shows, the problem is they are looking at what all the WRONG people are watching and ignoring what the RIGHT people want. We don't get the chance to speak out because of the lack of retro channels and everything has morfed into "reality" TV. The big wigs close their eyes to the "Classic TV" fans and that is tragic. I bet you that if they would level the playing field with the correct amount of old shows and stations, they would see the dramatic change. JMO. I know that if I had more classic stations, I would monopolize those stations.

I have been pondering on this idea for years, and it boggles me how nobody is willing to offer up a chance to bring a lot of these classic shows back on the air. Is it our incompetence or our ignorance? In my opinion, I think the answer is both.

Look at XM Satellite. It has a 1940s and 1950s station that plays all of the hits and other songs from those eras. It also has Classic Rock, Classic Country, and Early R&B. Look at Turner Classic Movies. Pictures from the Silent Era to the 1970s. Contains footage of a wide array of stars, from Charlie Chaplin to Burt Reynolds. So my question is, if Turner Classic does their job with movies, why can't there be a channel that does the same thing with television shows?

It really doesn't make sense. There are more older viewers out there than one might think, and I'm sure kids wouldn't mind watching a show that their parents probably saw when they were younger. For a time, Nick at Nite and TV Land both aired classic television shows. TV Land at one point, aired Ed Sullivan and Laugh-In. But today, they represent nothing that is related to classic television, and I think that is in part with people thinking that nobody wants to watch "Old" sitcoms anymore.

In the end, I believe that the people responsible are too lazy to put the classics back on the air. I cannot find I Love Lucy anywhere on satellite, and just like the past few years have been, television is slowly removing all of the black-and-white shows, due to declines in interest. I just wish someone out there can turn this idea into a reality.

I Love Lucy will never be off the air. As I said elsewhere, it is still on the air on two local stations here in Northwest Ohio. Someone else said ILL is on Los Angeles TV as well. Even if the show leaves the national cable channels, this situation is not anymore different than when the series left CBS' morning line-up in 1967 and went into local syndication. The biggest difference from then to now is that then you didn't have the internet to find out where it was airing.

The entire series is available on DVD and is easy to access. Most public libraries here have the series on DVD (and some still have the VHS tapes) so it can be seen. The series has been misteated by Hallmark, not given a chance to build an audience on that channel. How can the network expect it to when it airs it at 9am one week, 2pm the next week, 3:30am the following week, off for 3 weeks, back at 10am, then at 12pm, etc etc etc. As I said, if this is it for ILL on Hallmark so be it ... as the crown jewel of sitcoms it deserves better treatment that it has been getting. (And I believe I read online that Hallmark will be airing a marathon of ILL on October 4 as mentioned in this link clicking here.)

The Three Stooges are currently not being aired on any national channels, and except for an occassional marathon on any local channels in the country that I know of. Yet, the DVD releases of these short films have been a success for Sony that they plan on releasing all 190 shorts on DVD. I believe that if the Stooges can be as successful as this, and still be finding a new audience, then Lucy will survive as well. Even though there are people here who say they never heard about the series until stumbling upon it one afternoon on TV (where have these people been living their entire lives?!?!) a lot more people say they were introduced to the show from a relative who watched it. It is my belief that as long as there is some access to the show somehow - TV reruns, DVD's, VHS, 16mm, laser disc, ViewMaster films, etc - and people willing to share their love of the series with others around them, Lucy will live forever.

Add some of the Norman Lear sitcoms (All in the Family, Maude, The Jeffersons) and some of the classic 80's shows like "Facts of Life", "Gimme a Break!" and popular shows rarely seen and you got a network! And all of the shows would have to be UNCUT of course, with only the designated spaces for commercials.

If I ever become a multi millionaire I am starting my own TV station that will show nothing but the classics (ok maybe a couple of shows from the 70's).

Here in Chicago, on the TV station WCIU, The Three Stooges air every Saturday night from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM.

You know, I'm glad to hear this! They haven't played on TV here in northwest ohio on a channel that we can get in probably 2 years (at the very least).

Ever since the switch to DTV and those so-called "extra" channels that are beaming from local TV..actually I am a bit surprised more local stations don't use them for classic TV. Yes I know about Retro TV..but rather than doing what our local NBC station is doing ( 24/7..a camera showing the town square and the local Target store and THAT IS IT !!! )..why NOT air I Love Lucy, Beaver, Joan Davis...and make a few extra bucks.
